Palm Springs' new sports arena for a future AHL team, an affiliate of the Seattle NHL team, this will work in a place without much professional or minor league sports to begin with (I like a California League baseball team, another Angels, out here).

In addition, the Agua Caliente Clippers G-League team in basketball should split home games with Ontario CA's arena, since the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla are based in Palm Springs, in this arena right where the tribe's headquarters are located.

I've been to two games already.

I wonder if St. Louis is now "hockeytown" from what I saw from that meme? ;)

Time to bump this thread with the upcoming 2020 NHL draft with some promising players like Alexis Lafrenière who play currently with the Rimouski Océnanic in the juniors where Vincent Lecavalier and Sydney Crosby beginned. https://www.nhl.com/news/alexis-lafreniere-nhl-draft-diary/c-314703770

And I checked the current bottom 5 in the standings, Detroit, Los Angeles, Ottawa, New Jersey and San Jose might get the #1 draft pick depending which one of the bottom 5 will win the lottery. https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/standings#/league

Scary situation during tonight's Blues/Ducks games. Jay Bouwmeester of St. Louis collapsed on the beach and was taken to the hospital. The game has been postponed: https://www.tsn.ca/st-louis-blues-anaheim-ducks-game-postponed-after-jay-bouwmeester-collapses-on-bench-1.1441462

Relatively quiet trade deadline. Robin Lehner, to me, was the most notable move of 2020. Blake Coleman was another big one but that was pre-deadline. Meanwhile, the Rangers somehow wrangled a first rounder out of Brady Skjei, so that plus holding onto Chris Kreider is a win in my book. Any other thoughts?

ET21

Blackhawks sucked at this trade deadline. Such a middle move with no clear sign we want to do a mini replenish build or were gunning for the wild card hunt. Also trading Lehner for a goalie WORST than Crawford is a big no from me. Could Subban have a nice renaissance? Potentially, but right now what a bad deadline.

So, a goalie in the penalty box.  That's something I never thought I'd see.

Are NCAA and NHL rules different maybe for how majors and misconducts are served?  I guess the key is that the penalty may be served by another player, just like the DH may be used to hit for the pitcher in the AL.  It's not absolutely required, but it is how things are implemented 99.9999999% of the time.  The only question is what happens if the backup goalie that comes in gets hurt while he's serving the penalty?  And obviously, it can't be a manpower penalty because you're not going to have a goalie come out of the penalty box while play is live.

And if the Playoffs gets canceled, it would be the third time there will be no Stanley Cup Champion (the other two was 1919 and 2005) and the 2nd time a Pandemic canceled the Stanley Cup. The 1919 Stanley Cup was canceled due to the Flu.

This was a bad year for the NHL to be suspended. The Bruins are 1st in the league. Hopefully they at least get the President's cup even if playing the playoffs isn't feasible.

You're saying this as if the Bruins are objectively better. A good/bad year to be suspended would more likely be based on revenue, not what your personal favorite team is.

This was a great year for the NHL to be suspended. The Rangers are 9th in the conference. Hopefully they at least get the Stanley Cup next year and for many years thereafter.

I'm reading a book about the World Hockey Association. On Sunday I said something about "Brass Bonanza" and my wife made the mistake of asking me whether it's a catchy song. I promptly stuck my iPod in its dock and played the song. She's now mad because the song is still stuck in her head on Tuesday.

Hey, the NHL might let 24 teams in the playoffs I heard, so it might not be over for them.

If it goes by division/wild card, then yes, we're in.
But some have been saying it'll be fully divisional, then the Sabres would switch with the Rangers. It would also involve teams under .500, and I think the NHL is trying to stay away from that.
Hope everyone is safe!

A new twist in the events. https://www.tsn.ca/nhl-planning-24-team-return-in-2-hub-cities-new-draft-lottery-format-1.1479427

QuoteNHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced Tuesday the league is planning a 24-team Return to Play format but could not give specific dates on when games might start.

Bettman added that he does not believe training camps will open before the first half of July, meaning that if it lasts three weeks the season would likely not resume until August should it be deemed safe to play. Bettman said the Return to Play Committee is still debating whether the format/playoffs will use re-seeding or bracketing.

https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1265381481939156992

As part of Tuesday's announcement, Bettman said the 2019-20 regular season is considered complete.

The 24-team plan will use an order of finish determined by each team's points percentage as of the league pause on March 12. The top four clubs in the Eastern and Western Conference will play separate mini round-robin tournaments to determine seeding for the playoffs. The other eight teams in each conference would play best-of-five "play-in" qualifying series to determine the 16 clubs left standing.

Bettman says the first- and second-round playoff matchups could be either best-of-five or best-of-seven series, but the conference finals and Stanley Cup final will be best-of-seven.
