After years of wanting to do a Route 66 drive, the opportunity has finally come for me and a friend to head out down the Mother Road, as part of a larger trip towards Daytona (for the NASCAR weekend) and Orlando (for a brief Disneyworld visit). Overall we wanted to emphasize US routes as much as possible and only use Interstates when necessary, and to some degree our NorCal US 40 trip last Saturday was a dry run for this.
Current planned route:
DAY 1
- From the SF area, 101 south to 58 in Santa Margarita
- 58 from Santa Margarita to Barstow (maybe use old 466 if there is time), then historic 66 from Barstow to Flagstaff. I know that parts of old 66 east of Amboy are closed due to washed out crossings, so obviously 40 would be necessary at certain times.
DAY 2
- 66 (as much as possible) from Flagstaff to Oklahoma City
DAY 3
- 66 from Oklahoma City to East St. Louis
- 50 from East St. Louis to Shoals, Indiana
- 150 from Shoals, Indiana to Louisville
After two or so days in Louisville, I was thinking of trying to hit up as many NASCAR track sites as possible between there and Myrtle Beach:
- Ona Speedway
- Bristol (I think we might be able to go through that interesting bypass in Pikeville on the way here)
- North Wilkesboro
- Hickory
- Charlotte Motor Speedway
- Rockingham
- Darlington
- Myrtle Beach Speedway
The next day would be a coastal route to Daytona from Myrtle Beach, via US 17 and FL A1A.
On the way back, we were thinking of going a bit more of a southern route, since we'll have a full 8 days to get back to California from Florida. My friend also just mentioned a desire to check out Lake Tahoe on te way home. Provisionally, I've proposed (with some changes suggested by Max Rockatansky from New Mexico onward):

- For the Route 66 (Barstow-St. Louis) segment of the trip, I do want to hit as many of the major attractions as possible, all while still maintaining decent highway pace (55-70 MPH). Oatman section would be an exception but overall I still want to make sure we do make good time along the journey. So trying to find a balance between "fun 66 alignment" and "practical near-interstate speeds", a little different from the 1930s vibes of our US 40 journey a week ago. Definitely going to hit up the big independent segments of 66 (Amboy, Kingman-Seligman, the run through Kansas instead of using tolled I-44) as much as we can within reason.
- Still undecided whether the NASCAR track point-to-point tour should include Ona or not, as it would be cool to add West Virginia to my list of states I've been to, but that does add about 160 miles to the Louisville-Myrtle Beach drive.
- The nice aspect of the way home is the full 8 days for making that drive back. Are there any notable road closures on the New Mexico/Arizona/Utah/Nevada sections above? In an early version of route planning my friend and I considered Route 4 near Ebbetts Pass but not sure how that will fare due to recent wildfires in that area. I'm excited to do both 89A routes and Max R. mentioned how scenic that portion of US 70 from NM to AZ can be. (Original route proposal I had for that was AZ 80, then historic 80/89 to Phoenix)
I need to look into this but I want to say the general path of NV 207 was the original pre-Cave Rock path of the Lake Tahoe Wagon Road. If you got a little extra time it might be worth swinging up through US 89 and UT 9 to see the Mount Carmel Highway in Zion National Park.

US 150 joins up with I-64 just west of New Albany. Here are a couple alternatives to that section of I-64 that are interesting drives.
The most straightforward one is the previous routing of US 150, which is signed as Paoli Pike and State Street.
Another one is Corydon Pike, which you can get to by going west one exit on I-64 instead of following US 150/I-64 east.
Roadtrip starting in a few hours! Lots of new territory for me so I'm pretty hyped right now.

So the trip has ended up evolving based on weather situations (particularly trying to avoid Lake Tahoe fires and Hurricane Ida) as well as the realities of trying to make it to certain places on time.
Tons of photos taken, but will have to spend some time figuring out which ones will be most interesting from a road standpoint.
ROUTES TAKEN:
Day 1: US 101, Route 58, Westside Parkway, Old US 466, Old US 66, I-40, old US 66 (including current US 95) AZ 95, Old US 66, I-40 from the Bay Area to Flagstaff
Day 2: I-40 from Flagstaff to Oklahoma City, including detours on old 66 in Winslow, AZ, and most notably gravel sections of 66 in New Mexico (particularly near Glenrio, TX). Also did the through-town Amarillo segment.
Day 3: Oklahoma City to Louisville - I-35 to Kilpatrick Turnpike to I-44 to SH-69A to US 69 (old US 66) to Alt US 69 (old US 66) to K-66, then I-44 to St. Louis, I-64 to Louisville.
Day 4 and 5 were spent in the Louisville area
Day 6: Louisville to Florence, South Carolina. I-64, US 60, US 421 to Lexington, then I-64 to Beckley, WV (including I-77 concurrency), with a stop at Ona Speedway to look at the track. I-77 south to Mt. Airy, NC. US 52/I-74 southeast to Winston-Salem and High Point. US 220 (I-73/I-74) from near High Point to Rockingham, was able to get entrance photos at Rockingham Speedway. Then NC/SC 177 to SC 38 to US 401 to Darlington and then US 52 to Florence
Day 7: Darlington to Daytona! After hitting up the track via SC 34, we took SC 340 and SC 403 to I-95, then I-95 to SC 170 to SC 315 to Savannah. US 80 to I-516 to I-16 back to 95 south until the Daytona Beach area.
Day 8 and 9 were spent at the speedway
Day 10: Orlando. I-4 west pretty much.
Day 11: Orlando to Atlanta mostly US routes - after navigating through the suburbs, we did US 27 to US 441 to US 41 to US 129 for dinner in Macon, then I-75 to Atlanta. We decided on this detour (instead of our originally planned Gulf Coast route) due to Ida hitting NOLA.
Day 12: Atlanta to Talladega to Florence, AL to Memphis. I-20 west to Talladega (where I spent a ton of time at the museum), then I-65 north from Birmingham, AL 157 northwest to Florence and US 72 west to Memphis.
Day 13: Memphis to Shreveport. Almost entirely on US 79! We did see a mural in one town with I-69 marked (which will ultimately be the primary corridor someday between the two twons).
Day 14: Shreveport to Dallas to San Antonio. US 80 from Shreveport to Dallas entirely (including using the old road west of I-30) where we met up with a friend who is into the 1990s Ford Thundebirds like the one we used for this trip! Afterwards we took I-35E, US 67, I-35W, and I-35 to Waco for gas, then 35 all the way to Austin for a dessert stop, and finally to San Antonio near the Alamo.
Day 15: San Antonio to El Paso. US 90 entirely from San Antonio all the way to Van Horn - really neat to see 75 MPH two-lane roads! - then I-10 west to El Paso for dinner.
Day 16: El Paso to Phoenix. Started out using historic US 80 (Texas SH 20, NM 478, US 70, NM 549, NM 418), then US 70 from Lordsburg to Globe, and then US 60 into metro Phoenix (followed by Loop 202 to get to dinner and hotel).
Day 17: Phoenix to Tonopah, NV. We originally wanted to do Arizona 89A and old 66 but in the interest of time, did the straightest possible shot (US 60, US 93/I-11) to Boulder City. Afterwards, we took essentially historic 93/95 from Boulder City all the way to the Rancho Drive/Gragson Expressway junction in North Las Vegas. then 95 all the way up to Tonopah as sunset arrived towards Amargosa Valley.
Day 18: The last day! From Tonopah back to SF but not a conventional route by any means. US 95 from Tonopah north to Hawthorne, then US 95A (signed twice as US 95A and once as Truck Alternate US 95) north (west physically) to Yerington, NV 339 and NV 208 southwest towards US 395, then Route 89 north briefly. Currently at dinner in Arnold, CA after successfully traversing Ebbetts Pass on Route 4 westbound (including a lot of one-lane segments!). SF later tonight.

I looked into this a little. First, the blacked out language is for Bakersfield, not Buttonwillow. Second, here is the location on google maps:

The intersection of Twenty Mule Team (TMT) and Old 58.
TMT was the original US 466/ CA 58 through this area. THen, a bypass of Boron was built. The state highway followed TMT to the east and Old 58 to the west and TMT to the west was the business route. Some point later, the 4-lane bypass of Boron was built, and that became the newer 58 and Old 58 was left off as an orphan. Now, you could no longer make the turn from TMT to Old 58 with the intent of reaching Bakersfield, since Old 58 became blocked by the new 58 freeway, so the sign was blacked out.
Quite interesting.
The next time you go to Florence, Alabama, make sure you're there early enough to swing by the lobby of 201 South Court Street. There's literally dozens of gold records on the wall, not to mention several other historical artifacts.
