I'm not fooling you. These really are headlines about California Highways for March 2026. I promise I didn't create or fabricate a single one of them.

Here's the link to the post: https://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=17566

Ready, set, discuss.

I'll probably pass by the Shaver Lake Viaduct on 168 a couple times in August.  I'm doing another museum presentation out there and I'm hoping to spend some time out past Kaiser Ridge.

Given how the right of way is maxed out on US-101 north of I-380 in a lot of places and how vocal the locals are against physical widenings, I think it's going to end with the no-build alternative or the converting an existing lane to express lane alternative.

I still don't understand the issue of SANDAG toll collection. I would think that relaying usage data to the FasTrak billing system would all be handled by a piece of software, with no human intervention. I can't imagine why it's so expensive, or difficult, to run the system, once the infrastructure is all built and paid for.

QuoteStarting around 2020, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority began conducting research on expanding the project north of the interstate, either by converting an existing lane into an express lane or constructing a brand-new one. The initiative is in the environmental and preliminary design phase, which began in 2020 and is a multiyear effort now expected to be completed in summer 2027

7 years of design and environmental review. Very normal, nothing to see here folks.

QuoteThe $488,000 project to replace the Castroville sign was made possible by Gov. Newsom's Clean California program led by Caltrans.

I guess $488k isn't that much in the grand scheme of state budgets, but I'd be curious to see how that breaks down. Seems like a lot. But what do I know.

Glad to see a mention of Neptune's Net (on SR 1 in Ventura County). The place can get crowded so an improved pedestrian crossing could be helpful.

I had the worst piece of fish I ever tried to eat at that restaurant. I can't imagine why anyone would want to cross the road to get there.

So that they die more quickly from being hit on the way back instead of food poisoning?

I actually don't care about the restaurant. However, I care strongly about the Camps across Yerba Buena from the restaurant. I attended the Wilshire Blvd Temple Camps from 1969 through 1979, so they are special to me, and so any highway news related to them (such as a crossing at Neptunes Net, or replacement of the Little Sycamore Bridge) is of interest to me.

Funny, I still haven't been there but I'm gonna try it soon. What did you get I want to see how bad it is.

Fish and chips. I think they forgot it and left it in the oil for fifteen minutes. It had the texture of a thick piece of bacon.
