Any wooden signs left in the field in CT?
Better yet, is the I-95 1950s shield and the old "CONN" 184 signs still up in Groton. Thinking of taking a road trip out there.
I also wonder if the 16" 138 sign is still around?

I haven't heard anything about the CONN 184 disappearing, though I do know the CONN off I-91 Exit 6 is very much still there, as well as the CONN 137 (outline shield) and a couple of others out Stamford way. Wooden signs, short answer is yes, many, long answer is damn dude, I can't memorize every time I see one.

What I'm wondering is, how does the count of wooden signs in service in Connecticut compare to the number of wooden retired Connecticut signs in a certain apartment in central Ohio...
Any wooden signs in service in central Ohio? I was in Columbus three years ago today and don't remember seeing any. :)

I can tell you about some signs mounted on wooden 8×8 posts, but the signs themselves are made on metal substrate.
I have never seen a wooden Ohio sign, though I have not really paid close attention to the substrate of big green signs.

There are five outlines still in service. The 137 you mention (see my avatar) is the most blatant and easy to spot - it's southbound directly past the Merritt, in very plain sight. There is also a pair of 15s in Stamford (see avatar again) which probably owe their continued existence to being on a locally maintained road - the intersection of Roxbury Rd and Riverbank Rd. There is a TO 15 in Westport westbound on 136 right after the bridge which I *think* is still there but haven't been by in a couple years. And then there is the 25 in Trumbull by the park and ride off exit 9, which is an amazing survival story because it was
knocked over and yet it wasn't scrapped - some crew picked it up and put it back up!
I don't think there are any CONN squares around other than the ones that have already been mentioned.

I remember Stamford having several old wooden street signs in service back in the 90s, and a couple of them were still around a few years ago. I'm 99% sure they're all gone now, though. Here's a picture of one from 2008:

Last summer there was a wooden "One Way Do Not Enter" in Naugatuck but that is now gone. Possibly a wooden "One Way" in the Huntington section of Shelton.

Oh yes. Some of the small green signs along US 20/US 23 southeast of Toledo were wooden back when I attended a meet there several years ago. I think I got an up-close-and-personal photo but would have to check to be sure.

got it. will have to look closer. I've never seen a wooden independent route shield from Ohio. perhaps during WW2? the only wood shields I can think of from CA and NM date to then, and I'll bet this is true for other states as well.

I believe they date mostly from the late 70s when the parkway had its original wooden guide signs replaced, with a few from the early 80s, although you'll have to ask Steve Anderson what his source on that is. We can at least say that the presence of a 25 off the expressway dates that particular shield to the opening of that road in 1982. We also know for certain that they were only ever used on and in the vicinity of the Merritt Parkway. Guide signs along the parkway all used to have them but those were replaced ca. 2000 with the current generation of distinct signage (I remember being in middle school when those started popping up).
It is possible there were outline shields from before the aforementioned guide sign replacement project, but early 80s is definitely the ceiling on how new any of the State-installed outline shields could be (Greenwich's bastardized pair is significantly newer).

Yes, the sign was still there last I noticed. Will be by that way in a few days, will double check. There is no street view for Charter Avenue on google and I see nothing at all on the satellite view where the sign is located, but it's grainy rural satellite photography at it's finest, so it appears it's simply not being picked up.
