Title: The Furthest Into A State Can You Go On An Interstate....
Post by: thenetwork on August 26, 2013, 10:33:47 PM
...before you encounter your first exit with a US or State Route or other Interstate?

Due to decommissioning of several routes over the decades, you now have to go all the way to Exit 20 to reach the first shielded route (I-275) and Exit 28 for the first state route (M-85).

Any other noteworthy distances into a state before reaching the first overall route &/or state route?

I thought to look at this since I drove it in the past two weeks. Entering Montana on I-90 WB from Wyoming you go about 40 miles to the first exit with a numbered route (U.S. 212).

The winner for Iowa is I-35, heading south from Minnesota: 15 miles until you reach IA 9. (The first exit used to be IA 105, but it has since been demoted to a county road.)

I-29 and I-80 both intersect state-maintained highways within a mile of entering Iowa at both of their ends, and I-35 intersects US 69 at the Iowa/Missouri border.

I-90 makes it 33 miles into Montana before the exit for MT 135.
I-15 in the same state has 44 miles before MT 324.

Of course, we also have to consider that this can be measured at the end of the state as well as the beginning: I-84 in Idaho goes 53.5 miles from its junction with I-86 to the Utah state line without directly intersecting another signed numbered highway.

Also, I-A1 (signed as AK 2 on this segment) is a good 77 miles from the border with Yukon at Alcan to the intersection with AK 5 in Tetlin Junction. But that's not an "exit" so it doesn't count. :)

The first interchanges encountered on all of the state-line crossing interstates in Wisconsin, other than for I-90 from the west, are with numbered state highways.

For WI, then, the deepest such first encounter is US 53/WI 35 (interchange 3), on I-90 in La Crosse.  Interchange 2 is a local street.

It's amazing (or perhaps not) how many Interstates are disqualified because their very first exit in a state is with a numbered highway.

The longest I could find not already mentioned here is I-15, which intersects nothing but county roads in its 29.43 miles through Arizona.  Colorado's record is pretty high too... on I-25, it's about 21 miles from the Wyoming state line to SH 1.

Interesting related question: what's the farthest between exits for state highways? I think Florida's Turnpike is still the longest between exits, period (49 miles if you get on northbound at Yeehaw Junction), but there have to be longer state highway examples out west.

I-80 in Wyoming has a 57-mile stretch, from WYO 377 at Point of Rocks (exit 130) to WYO 789 (exit 187). And exit 130 isn't signed as WYO 377, so to motorists it looks like 65 miles, with the western end being exit 122.

--Interstate: I-70 from Colorado state line to I-15, 232 miles

If we're talking about state+ highways and not numbered highways in general, then Minnesota's longest from the state line is I-35 from Iowa, where it's only 8 miles to the US 65 exit in southeast Albert Lea.  All the other Interstate crossings have an interchange with a state or US route within a mile-and-a-half, 3 of those within only a half-mile of the state line (I-94 Moorhead, I-94 Afton, I-90 La Crescent).

Then there's I-10 in Alabama where, coming from Florida, you go 14 miles before you even get to an exit (Exit 53/CR 64).  And add another 9 miles before you cross a state highway (Exit 44/AL 59).

In California:

On I-15 it's about 50 miles from the Nevada state line to CA-127.

On the second question: on I-40, it's 133 miles between I-15 and US-95.

Ditto for New Jersey. I think coming from PA on I-80 EB wins for New Jersey, at a whopping 4¼ miles. Then you have I-78 from PA, which is almost 4 miles.

From what I could see, Ohio's is along I-76 near Youngstown.  The first interchange, with I-680, is 7 miles from the Pennsylvania border.  Actually, there is no exit in the 16 mile stretch between I-376 in PA and I-680 in OH. Makes sense though....since I-76 is a turnpike.

For a non-tolled interstate, it would be I-74 near Cincinnati.  Its interchange with I-275 is 5.5 miles from the Indiana border.

*Fun fact*
The first (or last, depending on your direction of travel) interchange along I-80, I-70, I-470, and I-77 in eastern Ohio is with State Route 7 (7A, in the case of I-470).

Other stretches come close though.
I-88 from Exit 78 (I-39/US-51) to Exit 109 (IL-47), 31 miles.
I-72 from Exit 103 (I-55) to Exit 133 (US-36/51), 30 miles.

In a similar fashion as Ohio's example, the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/I-90) goes 13 miles from the Ohio state line before hitting its first interchange at I-69. Then it's 23 miles between the I-69 exit and the SR 9 exit, marking what should be the longest distance between exits at all in the entire state on any freeway.

All other unmentioned Michigan interstate entrances only intersect a signed route within a mile of the state line, except I-75 from the north, which doesn't intersect a signed route until three miles later.

I dunno, I took the OP's use of the term "shielded route" to imply that unsigned highways don't count. If we go by maintenance rather than by signage this changes a lot of answers and makes them more difficult to determine since you can't just peruse an ordinary map. I would never have guessed that that dinky road was state maintained!

This also then begs the question: in West Virginia, where nearly 90% of all public road mileage is state maintained, is there an exit off an interstate which leads to one which is not?

Actually, the Thruway goes 11 miles from the PA border before hitting NY 394 in Westfield.  The Thruway Authority built the Ripley exit at a random local road rather than NY 76 so it could be close to the PA border (which looks idiotic, except Ripley probably wouldn't have gotten an exit at all if it weren't on top of the border).

EDIT: And for the second question, the longest in NY is possibly the Thruway between NY 394 and NY 60 in Dunkirk, at 17 miles, but I've only given this two seconds of thought. NY 17 may beat the Thruway here NY 17 between NY 19 and NY 21 (19 miles).

I-684 goes through CT without encountering a single state route or US route :sombrero:

Actually, the pathetic winner for CT has to be I-395 from the MA line to the CT 200 exit, which is maybe 3-4 miles tops.  RI winner has to be I-295 from MA (about 3.7 miles).

And exit 8 is for US 301. They don't actually cross, but the OP asks how long you can go before an exit for a state or US route. So I-95 northbound is 8 miles. I-95 southbound is about a mile, I-64 eastbound is 10 miles (US 60 departure and VA 159; westbound doesn't count), I-66 westbound about the length of this post (US 50; eastbound doesn't count), I-81 southbound 7 miles (US 11), I-81 northbound 1 mile (US 58/421), I-85 northbound 12 miles for the win (US 58; southbound doesn't count).

In CT, the longest into the state would be I-395 (4 miles from MA border to CT-200).

In MA, since Exit 1 on the Mass Pike is westbound only, that makes it 10 miles from the NY line to the first state highway that traffic coming into the state can exit at in Lee at US-20.

In RI, the longest would be just 1 mile, on I-295 from the MA line to RI-114.

Vermont would be a tie at 7.5 miles on I-91 from MA line to US-5 in Brattleboro and on I-93 from the NH line to VT-18.

Both Maine and NH would be less than a mile, as all entering interstates have interchanges almost right at the state lines.

Actually 3 miles on I-195, due to partial interchanges and the fact that the only westbound exit in East Providence is onto a local street (the guide signs are missing 'TO', but the assembly on the ramp correctly includes it). Unless you believe RI 152 still goes down that way.

For Washington, it's I-90, about 10 miles coming in from Idaho before you hit a state route.  On I-5, both on the north and south ends the first exit is a state route, and both within half a mile.  Ditto for I-205 coming in from Oregon, but it's closer to a full mile from the state line in the middle of the river before you hit SR 14.

Edit:  Crap, I forgot I-82.  However, there too the first exit is for SR 14, 1.02 miles from the state line.

*Fun fact*
The first (or last, depending on your direction of travel) interchange along I-80, I-70, I-470, and I-77 in eastern Ohio is with State Route 7 (7A, in the case of I-470).

Isn't the first / last exit on I-90 also State Route 7?

Oh yeah....missed that one! Thanks!

But that exit is mere feet from a state highway. How precise are we being, here?

I would assume it counts because the interchange itself doesn't intersect a state highway, despite being close to one.

Isn't that "random local road" NY 950D?

This brings up the question as to whether reference routes count.

QuoteWell, not as many, but the first state highway met from the west in Wisconsin by I-90, I-94 and I-535 (as well as by US 61/151 from the southwest and US 2, US 8 and US 18 from the west) is WI 35.

Did WisDOT decommission WI 87? :o)

Also, I'm not 100% on the signage status of the new truck bypass in Prairie du Chien, but if US 18 is fully on the bypass, its first route would now likely be WI 27.  Or TRUCK US 18.

Yikes, WisDOT didn't move it to that WI 35 interchange?  (I gotta have some words with the guys in the Eau Claire office....)

:-P

As for US 18 at Prairie du Chien, I find it interesting in that Google Maps is showing US 18 being rerouted to that new bypass routing - BUT with WI 27 still ending where it always has at WI 35.

In Indiana, on I-80/90 westbound you can go 12.8 miles before reaching the first exit.
On I-94 westbound the first exit is 5.8 miles

Those are the only two that are more than 5 miles.

I-10 into Alabama from Florida is several miles to the first interchange.
