Probably nothing, since that wasn't part of 522 until the 1940s. (Neither was Hancock to Winchester.)

the implication is that 11W would have returned to 11 via a multiplex with 40.

Or maybe to Winchester, but West Virginia or Virginia refused.

Wikipedia shows US-522 coming into existence in 1943, while usends says 1926.  which is correct?

I can't pick out a good route through PA, either. No wonder it never happened.

The north end of US 522 is at US 11...?

US 522 actually seems to be only about 10 miles longer than US 11 between Selinsgrove and Winchester. But it's a lot hillier and curvier.

I gave up following 522 halfway up the state when it looked like it was getting farther away from 11.

You probably assumed US 11 stayed with I-81. I've done the same and barely avoided not pooing.

The October 1940 Commonwealth Transportation Board minutes cites, in designating then-VA 522, "It is proposed to extend Federal Route 522 south from Hancock, Maryland to simplify the direction of traffic to the Skyline Drive from north or south."  Before that, it was part of VA 7, then VA 822 prior to July 1933, but it didn't reach the WV line until the end of 1930.

Nothing we've found suggests that Virginia was planning to reciporicate in this "US 11W".  Might have just been an idea of Maryland's that died because the other states didn't follow suit.
