Heh.... I was on a road trip today with my mother along California State Route 49.... and what do you know.... I have SNOW! This was east of Sierra City.

I'm just a little surprised, since I don't expect snow until mid-October at the earliest. Color me surprised.
We're supposed to get snow overnight here in Deer Lodge....I'm pretty excited about this!
Not common, but not unheard of either. Even in both Minneapolis and far northern New England, we've been known to get snow in late September.

Same thing in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. I've seen snow in the Keweenaw Peninsula as early as mid-late September. Of course, that season lasted until mid-May. :-D

Or Memorial Day weekend, as was the case this year, at least in northern New England as well as the Adirondacks.
Wasn't the first snow of 2013 back in January 2013?
Sorry, just had to post a dumbass comment to start.
Predictions for the mid atlantic: No snow til maybe late Dec
Hmm.. Ironically, this part of Canada hasn't snowed yet.
Early snow for the Rockies. Sucks for Colorado because of the already swollen creeks and rivers from the 3 feet of rain they received.

I dunno. Generally when there is a lack of hurricane activity, the Hampton Roads area tends to get a lot of snow. 2006 and 2009 were particularly bad years.
The central Dakotas could be in for an early snowstorm this weekend:

We had up to 1" of snow in Cincinnati last Monday. Then we had severe thunderstorms yesterday and close to 70 degrees. Go figure.
I'm seeing something pretty big for the end of this week in Québec, possibly up to 20 cm (8") in the Laurentians.
First snow of 2013? I happened upon some that was on the ground in Iowa on the way to home from California ;)
Today, 9:00 PM EST.

Second for NYC today; first was a few brief flakes in the wee hours a week or so ago.

It snowed one pre-dawn morning in north Jersey while you were away...stuck to the cars and grass, then melted later in the morning. Same as last night's dusting.
We had a few flurries a week or so ago, and you would have thought it was the apocalypse based on the way the news stations covered it.

Where in Central NJ? I didn't see any over here in Hillsborough. I only heard the wind pound my window.
Well last week's snow fell down as rain instead here. There's been light flurries for the past few days, but no accumulation. This week's forecast predicts another good fall, but no one seems to agree on whether it's going to be rain or snow.
Finally, the first snow above one inch
Least it helps the holiday spirit
Ugh, the snow here was wet and the freezing rain is making it worse. Damn heavy stuff to shovel.
The Philly area got unexpectedly hit with 6" to 8" this past Sunday afternoon. Such made for a rather interesting football game over at the Linc. (Eagles vs. Lions). Only one field goal attempt (which was very unsuccessful) was made due to the field conditions. It was probably the only time one saw so many 4th down, 2-point conversion attempts in one game.
Final score: Eagles 34/Lions 20.
The storm also caused a 50-car chain reaction pile-up along the PA Turnpike (I-76) westbound between the Downingtown (PA 100) and Morgantown (I-176/PA 10/23) interchanges that included one death.
The recent snowstorm hit South Jersey hard, causing lots of delays along heavy traffic roadways like the New Jersey Turnpike as well as numerous vehicular accidents across the state due to the poor conditions on the road. Where I live, we only saw a light coating on the roads, whereas in counties such as Camden / Gloucester and the others in the southern half of New Jersey got up to 3/4 of a foot of snow.

The 2nd half of that game was an amazing display by the Eagles. I love that we're as hot as we are right now, and hope we can keep it going as we enter the last few games of the NFL season.

I was supposed to be at that game, and would have loved to experience it (well, the 2nd half anyway). Instead, I worked the plows for NJDOT, plowing the snow only miles away from the game. It definitely hit unexpectedly hard.
Always enjoy the day-after "pre-storm" forecasts. By far, most of them say an inch of snow late in the afternoon, then changing to rain. Today, most news stories mysteriously have upped what was originally predicted to 2" - 4", and all but eliminated the starting time of the storm (3 or 4pm, not 11am to noon). My wife was watching the weather channel, and even after there was several inches on the ground, the local forecast kept saying 1"!

Was that not expected? Guess I didn't read the forecasts carefully, because that amount doesn't sound surprising to me given the predictions I read (which were admittedly geared more toward my own area of NYC).
It's snowing again this morning. Roads were slushy but were fine in my car (front-wheel drive, manual transmission, all-season tires, antilock brakes weren't needed). The real problem is other drivers:
–Lots of invisible cars (people who think they're exempt from using headlights). Always seems a disproportionate number are white cars.
–Lots of people refuse to clean the snow off their vehicles so it flies up at the following vehicle.
–SUV drivers going way too fast.
–Many other drivers going way too slow. Look, slowing down some on slippery roads is a smart move, but it's possible to go too slowly. You need momentum to make it up the hills, and if you're going 5 mph you won't have that momentum! (I passed one guy who was going 5 mph while yapping away on his handheld cell phone. Idiot.)
–Too many people think the lanes don't exist if the markings are covered in snow. They drive straddling the double yellow line or they block both lanes while crawling. If you drive on a road every day, shouldn't you know where the lanes are even if the lines are covered?

I started out from the house and onto Md. 200. Driving that road when it snows (and it hasn't snowed much since it opened) is a pleasure. One of the things that the tolls pay for is very aggressive winter maintenance. I only drove it on the eastern end, but saw 5 (five!) MdTA trucks applying treatment to the roads and ramps.

I wish we would just require use of headlights (or DRLs) at all times - relatively small expense and it would make roads safer from dummys like that).

I was out and at the office (in a garage) before much snow piled up on the truck.

Four wheel drive is great (not all SUVs have it), but does not help to bring a vehicle to a stop.

I always try to keep that in mind. On multi-lane highways, I do drive somewhat "slow" (below (but not too much below) the posted limit) when it is snowing fairly hard, and let everyone in a hurry pass on the left.

That is one of those "happens sometimes" problems. I don't know why.

IIRC, the original forecasts for the Philly area was that it would start off as snow for about 1"-3" but then change over to sleet & rain;
and that it would start
later in the day. Nobody predicted what actually happened for the region that day; blizzard conditions for the early afternoon w/6"-8" accumulation.

^^Agree 100%. This is an often overlooked item/driving tip. It's also worth noting that even if one has an automatic transmission; these type of conditions are where the overdrive lock-out feature (if equipped) and the
lower gear settings need to be utilized. Such allows for a better grip/traction.
Last Sunday afternoon while heading home (I ventured out before the snow started), there was one snow/ice covered incline that required me to use both a low gear setting (1 or 2)
and momentum (I'm in a RWD Crown Vic. w/out a limited-slip differential nor traction-control/assist) in order to get through/over it.
Meanwhile, I was not expecting the snowfall that NYC is receiving at this moment...

Even the 1" to 3" is the absolute highest anyone had forecasted. The majority of forecasters kept it to about 1", starting about 3pm, then changing over to rain. The actual storm started between 11am and noon, and greatly intensified. And while the 8" isn't an unheard of snowfall, realize also that the transportation departments rely on the forecasts also - so many of them hadn't called anyone in early, and those that were called in didn't have the plows on their trucks, since 1" of snow isn't generally a plowable snow. Salting the roads is all that is required.
The roads hadn't been brined either. And that's because Friday/Friday night there was a lot of rain in the area which would've washed away the brine. And since brining is a money saver because it can be applied during regular working hours and stays effective until wet, it was pointless to call in people on Saturday, which would require overtime pay.
At least in NJ, considering everything, by 6pm or so the roads were in very good shape. Some issues here and there, but the main highways were moving along very well.
Not snow, but we got about an inch of ice November 22-23... We were supposed to have a playoff game on a turf field, but the ice froze it solid.... We got more ice last week, had about 5 days below freezing, wind chills around 4-10... I know it's nothing compared to other places, but as a native West Texan.... it was ridiculous..

This is why I believe a bowl game should be played in Lambeau Field on January 1 between the SEC and the Big Ten. Let's see how well the SEC team plays when it's 2 below zero on a frozen field.

Lambeau hasn't been frozen for quite a while thanks to the underground heating system (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d825faf0a/article/packers-frozentundra-mystique-melts-with-turfheating-system).
I love the rest of the idea though.
