Title: Des Plaines Oasis to close in 2014 - I 90 / Chicago
Post by: DevalDragon on September 27, 2013, 12:06:17 AM
Apparently they want to widen I-90 to 8 lanes and it won't fit under the Des Plaines Oasis.

So it will be demolished but the 7-11 and Mobile stations on each side will remain for the time being, but will eventually be demolished to build new ramps to the Elgin O'Hare expressway when it is extended.

Since they're paying termination fees to the vendors, I'm assuming the structure won't be replaced? If so that's a bummer. Those are one of my favorite features of Chicagoland roadways.

I probably stop there half a dozen times a year on my way between Schaumburg and Chicago.

If I read the article right, the original Oasis building was in place for 56 years, while the "rebuilt" oasis will be gone in less than 10.

There's your textbook example of Long-term Planning Failure.  :pan:

Apparently they want to widen I-90 to 8 lanes and it won't fit under the Des Plaines Oasis.

The existing shoulders look wide enough to me to squeeze eight lanes under there:

Measuring in Google Earth, I get about 59 feet for EB and about 56 feet for WB, more than enough for four 12 foot lanes plus some narrow shoulders, and certainly no worse than some of the Oasis on the Tri-State:

has some docs that put ramps over parts of the Oasis / Oasis parking lot's likely also height difference as well.

However, there are plans to add express bus lanes in the center, adding a total of two lanes per directions with concrete dividers between the bus lanes and the main lanes.

ISTHA needs to rebuild this popular oasis down the road a few miles.

I'm wondering if they would consider doing a one-sided Oasis like DeKalb. Problem would be where to put the ramps considering that is supposedly where the E-O'Hare Bypass ramps are going to start or like you said, possibly down the road

Yeah, but when you're talking about modifying a facility, you have to meet standards, and that just won't fly.
