Title: how to stop a specific type of junk mail?
Post by: agentsteel53 on October 09, 2013, 12:54:27 PM
(yes, I post here whenever I cannot articulate my query well enough for google)

I'm looking to stop a specific type of junk mail, whose name I do not know.  it is the kind that is a "loose" packet, all glossy, consisting of ads of local interest, and probably distributed identically into every mailbox in a given residential area.

by "loose" I mean it isn't in an envelope - if you handle it uncarefully, it falls apart completely (thus forcing you to look at more advertisers when you clean it up).

invariably, it is addressed to "resident".

how the fuck do you stop this?

If there is a "Return postage paid" postcard in the pile, tape a brick to the back of it and mail it.

not that kind of mail.  it's all advertisements and coupons; they never expect to see it again.

They pay a specific postage rate to have it delivered to every house/address on the route or to every box in the post office. I don't think you can opt out of it.

Bulk mail (as opposed to direct mail)? Saturation mailing?

You could claim that you believe it to be "erotically arousing or sexually provocative and therefore is a pandering advertisement": http://about.usps.com/forms/ps1500.pdf
http://www.co.eau-claire.wi.us/health_and_environment/recycle/reduceunsolicitedemail.htm
QuoteWhile the Order, established by Federal law in 1968, was initially designed to stop sexually provocative advertising, court cases have held that the determination of what constitutes offensive material is at the sole discretion of the recipient. For example, if clear-cutting of virgin forests to produce glossy advertising strikes you as obscene, you can use the Prohibitory Order to stop the mailings if other methods have not been successful.

http://www.dallascityhall.com/sanitation/junk_mail.html claims that contacting the sending company sometimes works.

Look at see if there is a name of a vendor anywhere on it. (I know what you're talking about–we have a similar thing distributed by Redplum around here.) You should be able to contact that company and have them stop it. Google might be able to help; I've seen environmentalist sites that have recommended opting out from such things, so it must be possible.

Redplum usually puts its inserts/coupons in the regional Sunday fish wrapper. I think Valassis does most of the direct mailing in this area.

This is how I stopped getting phone books. Warning: you may never get a phone company to repair your line if you go that route.

Since you're clearly not going to send me your CC info, let's talk about the mail itself. Are you talking about the loose coupon guides? Ours here is called Savings Safari. It's worthless except for restaurant coupons. I never knew we had so many Chinese restaurants near my house!
