Title: Road-related Trivia Questions
Post by: hotdogPi on October 26, 2013, 04:49:53 PM
***You cannot use the Internet to find the answers.***

There is no chat anymore, so I put trivia here.

You can answer other people's questions, and you can also make questions.

(Yes, I know these. I just want to see if you do.)

What is the only Interstate in New York that has no 3-digit interstates and is not planning on being extended?

Which two routes in Massachusetts are in only one city, have one end at I-93, and cross MA 28 in the middle?

What is the only route in Keene NH that was not originally a New England route?

What are the only two non-Interstate freeways inside I-285 in Georgia?

Which route is closest to the mouth of the Mississippi River?

Which Interstate becomes Mexico Route 15 at the Mexico/US border?

After going north on the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, what is the first US route you will see?

Which US route is closest to Intercourse, PA?

Not counting Hawaii, what is the southernmost freeway in the United States?

Finally I can answer some trivia questions. Those trivia nights were really trivia (over)nights for me! (Really, who would take part in a event that is held at 3:00 A.M.?)

Not counting US territories like Puerto Rico, it would be Florida 821.  If you're talking non-tolled controlled access highways, it would be Florida 826.

All these are Connecticut questions:

Which two state routes have portions that are impassable during the winter? (They're both signed routes, not secret.)

Which interstate route once featured a mainline crossover (that is, the opposing direction is on the right, and your direction on the left)

Which unsigned route is a double-decked, one-way route?

Which signed route designation was active for only 10 days before being withdrawn?

Where in the state was another four-level stack interchange proposed?

What two routes form a short wrong-way concurrency through a single-lane underpass?

There are four, actually. In addition to the already-mentioned GA 400 and GA 166, there's also the GA 13 freeway (formerly part of I-85), as well as the portion of the Stone Mountain Freeway (US 78) that extends inside the Perimeter.

Here is an interesting bit of NC trivia.  See if you can figure this one out.  First one isn't too difficult.

Greensboro had one potential route # = exit # and one actual one.  What route was it, and where was the potential one?  It may help to know that neither is currently in this configuration.

NC has five non-MUTCD compliant LEFT-bannered exits.  Where are they, and what makes the left banner non-compliant (hint, one is different from the other four).  Note:  This does not mean those that are simply left-tabbed without the banner (except for one, those are not recently upgraded).  That might help locate the others.

Here's one from Georgia.  It's okay if no one gets this, but here goes:  Before starting to upgrade their exit signs to the MUTCD compliance, Georgia actually complied with one major aspect of the specification.  The answer I'm looking for here I can give you a hint:  Several non-MUTCD compliant states also have implemented this specification for quite some time, though only a handful.

Part of the Greensboro question: I-40, exit 220 was once US 220.

MA 203 (Boston*) & MA 213 (Methuen)

*Access to MA 203 from I-93's Exit 11 (nb) & 11B (sb) (via Granite Ave.) is actually located in Milton adjacent to the Boston border.

Takumi has the answer about 220 right.  Exit 220 (Randleman Road used to be US 220 to Level Cross) was the potential one, and the actual one was US 220 South off the short-lived 40 bypass in Greensboro.  It is now exit 95.

Any ideas on the other two questions?

Correct. LA 23 ends in Venice which is the last community on the river which is levee protected. Any place further south is on stilts and can only be reached by boat.

It's not the closest road overall, though, as there is a parish road that extends a little further southwest into the Tidewater community (comprised largely of a lot of oil industry related infrastructure)

I know where two of the non-standard left exit tabs are. I-85 southbound, where US 1 turns away from it for good.

The "left" portion of the banner is not black-on-yellow. I'd rather this be the standard, honestly.

I should have said "interchanges"...this is one of them, though, yes.  I prefer the highlighting personally, makes the word LEFT stand out better.  Amazingly, GoogleMaps does not have that area up to date.

There are 3 more like it, and one that isn't (I guess technically the one that isn't is to the 2004 standard)

IIRC, isn't that the 2003 MUTCD standard (LEFT but no yellow)?  The required yellow only existed since the 2009 MUTCD.

Perhaps, but the sign shown was done after 2009, as were the other ones I'm referring to.

And 2004 had the version Massachusetts uses, IIRC.

How soon after 2009 were those BGS' erected?  It's possible that the design documents & specs. for those BGS may have predated the 2009 MUTCD but were erected afterwards.  Word of the change to yellow-out the LEFT banner may have come too late for these particular BGS'.

The previous MUTCD is from 2003 and the left tabs match what's shown in the earlier-posted photos.

MassDOT's full-yellow over the LEFT message design, didn't start making the scene on Bay State highways until after 2009.  Roadman can confirm when MassDOT actually spec'd out their design but I believe it was after or in-tandem with the current 2009 MUTCD.

Real-life example of MassDOT's LEFT Exit Tab design:

MassDOT's LEFT Exit tab design was first spec'd out in 2004, shortly after Massachusetts' adoption of the 2003 MUTCD.  The spec was in response to the "all green" left exit tab in the 2003 MUTCD.  The first left exit in Massachusetts to use the new tab is in New Bedford on Route 140 south at MA 18 - Exit 6 - the signs were installed about 2006.

Thanks for the info. & clarification.  Good to know.

The last time I was along that stretch of MA 140 was either 2004 or 2005 with my older brother during a weekend visit; which is why I never saw that new BGS.

It appears the yellow LEFT tab of the MA 140/18/Exit 6 BGS features a full-black border around the LEFT lettering vs. the 3-sided black border on the posted I-95/MA 128/Exit 45 BGS.

MA 140/18/Exit 6 BGS
http://goo.gl/maps/ooGeh (http://goo.gl/maps/ooGeh)

Was there a change to MassDOT specs regarding the black border between 2006 and today?

Either way, like you, I prefer the MassDOT approach to Left Exit tabs than the current MUTCD spec.

Okay, gonna finish this thread off with my answers.

1.  Yes, the Exit 220 (Randleman Road) was the correct answer.  It was at one time US 220 South, but this was when I-40 ended at I-85.  There was an Exit 220 for US 220 later on, when I-40 moved onto what is now I-73, but it was changed to Exit 95-I-73/US 220 South

2.  Here are the non-yellow bannered exits:

As shown several times, Exit 218 for US 1 between Henderson and Norlina off I-85 South
Exit 219 off I-40 West for Bus I-85/US 29 South US 70 West
(now compliant, but not when this question was asked) Exit 246 off US 74 East in Charlotte for NC 27 East
Exit 46B off I-40 East for I-26W/I-240E

The answer to the Georgia question was raised caps.  However, GA also has a sign assembly similar to the one in NC (Exit 165 off I-75 Southbound for I-16 Eastbound in Macon).
