I don't know. What are you missing? Have you ever walked along an old alignment that dead ends at a freeway and crossed the freeway at-grade to continue on the other side? No, you haven't? Wake up, sherson!

I don't intend to attempt this.

Usually when I'm following an old alignment that ends at a freeway, there's this clever implement called a fence that prevents me from crossing the freeway at grade.

There was an equally clever implement present that day called an unlocked gate.

I usually follow old alignments in my car.
I thought you meant "I was following this old alignment and 'ran across' a freeway," like you were surprised to find a freeway there in the middle of the old alignment.

Uh, no.  Walking across a freeway is pretty stupid, IMHO.  It's a good way to earn a Darwin Award.  Walk, bike, drive over to the nearest overpass or underpass and then cross.

Someone walked across I-93 in New Hampshire around Exit 32 to pick sunflowers that were there. There were several people. (I didn't see them walking, but they must have.)

I asked for a clarification and explain what seemed vague to me. I don't quite understand what or who sherson is; am I to assume you are insulting me?

Running across a freeway strikes me as Not a Good Plan.  If I want to follow an old grade or just get to the other side of the freeway for any other reason I find an overpass or underpass or go back to my car and drive around.

In that context, be glad he didn't say "come across."  :-D

There was at least one other way to interpret your point and I asked for clarification - there was no need to be rude.

Just consider the source.

Snarky till the day I die.

I've been on both sides of old 66 at I-44 (several locations). Rarely cross the interstate on foot, though...too dangerous.

I've run across Storrow Drive several times, but not to follow an old alignment, just because Storrow Drive. But now I have the idea planted.

I adopted a section of I-5 in California so I could legally stop there to check out old alignments of US 99. Does that count?

You can count Governor King's Turnpike as an old alignment or not. Built 1805-1806, it predates US-1 by a bit, and was probably abandoned by the time the 20th century rolled around.
