Title: An awful exit/entrance.. do these have a name?
Post by: relaxok on October 30, 2013, 05:06:45 PM
I drive from Marin County to Burlingame, CA in the peninsula to see my girlfriend, on US-101.   The Broadway/Burlingame exit on 101 going south is an abomination.  There's a semi-blind curved downhill overpass entrance ramp from Broadway that empties into the same 100 feet or so of pavement where people exit the exit ramp to Rollins Rd.  Basically, you cross streams to the left through the same lane that people exit through to the right.

I'm not having luck with new google maps urls so I'll paste this picture but you can look it up on gmaps to get a better idea.

Why would this EVER be built?  It seems like the absolute worst idea ever for an entrance/exit design and the amount of near accidents I've seen and experienced there is shocking.  I've also not sure I've seen an example quite so egregious - not in person anyway.

Squirrel Hill Interchange by Pittsburgh.  There is even a stop sign at the end of the on-ramp for vehicles trying to merge on to EB I-376.

Why would this EVER be built?

The interchange configuration appears to have originally been a mere trumpet with auxiliary ramps in 1949, with no cloverleaf or northbound ramp to Bayshore:

The awkward cloverleaf from Broadway WB to SB 101 was added sometime between 1968 and 1975, to give access from Bayshore Highway to 101 south.

IIRC, on Dan Faigin's Cahighways.org, he notes that there are plans to replace this interchange with a conventional diamond in the near future.

While I've never been to California, the map prompted me to recall this nuisance of an interchange near Filton. When you work out the traffic flow, remember traffic drives on the left. The real nuisance is if you miss your exit, as you'll be driving some distance before you can turn around for another go. (I believe since I visited they've built another road a short distance to the south that uses traffic lights instead of an interchange.)

Hey look, it's a Jersey freeway.

I'm even more concerned about that northbound exit, which, if Google Maps is correct (a big if, I know), appears to dump you out onto a one-way street going the wrong way!

Jersey freeways use signalized roundabouts? (Pan the map a bit to the north)

Haha. Saw the topic title and came in here to post exactly this interchange. I once drove a friend from SF to one of those hotels on Airport Blvd. That was rather convoluted.

I don't even know what to make of this mess. Looks like a messed up hybrid between a couple RIRO's, folded trumpets and malformed diamonds. Would spider's web be a name to use for this monstrosity?

The US 30/130 Airport Circle in the Pennsauken/Camden area is kinda close to a signalized circle.  And several of NJ's busier circles did have signals used to meter traffic into the circle, although most if not all of those circles have been converted into intersections/interchanges.  But once you were beyond the traffic light, which was several hundred feet before the circle, the circle itself operated like a normal jersey traffic circle.

As for the name, I'd call this a modified parclo. Unroll the Bayshore Highway to Broadway movement so it crosses the Broadway to 101 north ramp at-grade and it's a normal 7-ramper.

Yeah, there's an extra arrow that shouldn't be there.  Probably related to why it inexplicably goes from white to yellow to white to yellow.

Great info, thanks.. I would not be surprised that this was on an ASAP basis.

I've walked this intersection - or rather, the lengthy curved walkway that winds over it. I was staying at the Holiday Inn, and took the walkway to get to the train station.

All the while thinking "man, what a mess, glad I'm not driving..."

I've driven that intersection a couple of times.  Part of the problem was there's a short distance between the train tracks and 101.  Ramps with good sightlines plus an intersection at the end won't fit well in that space.  And the area was already built up when the overpass was built, so it would have been expensive to do it right.

Sorry to necro this but this interchange is finally under construction.  The new plan is much better, which wouldn't be too high a bar.

Of course, one of the construction cranes yesterday knocked over a transmission tower, putting live wires on the highway.

Result?  U.S. 101 closed all lanes in both directions for about 15 hours.  Oops!

and closed again tonight from 10 PM to 5 AM while PG&E, our local power company, strings new lines over the freeway and make repairs to the other two towers which were also damaged...

The NJ 38 circle (the one in Cherry Hill where 38 meets Church Road, Cooper Landing Road, and Coles Road) is hardly one of the busier ones (it doesn't even have a name), but it is certainly traffic light controlled. Of course, NJ 38 cuts through that circle, and left tuns from the circle onto NJ 38 are allowed at the traffic lights.

The 38 circle isn't a busy one?  A recent traffic count in 2012 is 47,000 vehicles a day on Rt. 38 alone near the circle.

Compared to other circles and former circles where more than one highway is in play, like 202/206, 70/73, or 41/70/154

there's hardly the level of traffic on Church, Coles, or Cooper Landing either - I doubt they'll re-rebuild that circle like they did with Marlton and Ellsburg.
