Title: G'day!
Post by: AussieInDC on November 11, 2013, 10:16:12 AM
G'day everybody.

Stumbled across the forum. Thought I'd join up. Just finished a West Coast loop.

I've done a few other drives on the east coast. Looking at going to Kentucky/Tennessee over the Thanks Giving weekend.

Also, I've always wanted to know if the "48 States" could be driven by only going through each state once.
This was my plan. Not sure if i'll drive it :hmmm:

yes, you can go through each of the 48 precisely once.  but you have to start, or end, in Maine.

there is no closed loop that will get the job done, as you have to go through New Hampshire to get to Maine, and you have to go through New York to get to New England in general.  (there may be ferries which avoid these restrictions and allow you a loop.)

I don't think there are any ferries between Maine and other U.S. points. There wouldn't be much point, since there's no large body of water that is shaped to make on-land trips significantly longer.

Is going up into Maine, then Canada, then westward to Detroit permitted? (Or vice versa?)

I seem to recall this having been the topic of a puzzler on Car Talk some months ago.
