Title: Text-only US 9 sign in Poughkeepsie
Post by: dgolub on December 11, 2013, 05:20:33 PM
There's a text-only big green sign at the exit for US 9 from US 44 in Poughkeepsie.  It's a new-style reflective sign that doesn't require lighting, so it clearly doesn't date back to when text-only was common.  Does anyone know why this is?

There's a photo available at http://www.greaternyroads.info/roads/nystate/us44.  It's the last one under westbound.

Not sure the reason, but the new sign looks just like the one it replaced, which was definitely showing signs of age.

Perhaps the engineer was told to replace it with the same legend and they took that literally. It could be a cost cutting move as well; years ago I mentioned to someone at NYSDOT that perhaps the post-interchange mileage signs could be in all text instead of putting route markers on them, after all, all text legend is still fully allowed by the MUTCD. Maybe someone took it to heart. :)

Personally I like the all text guide panels but that's probably because I'm old in road geek years.

That sign is basically a carbon copy of the one it replaced:

Going to the image URL redirected me to an HTML page showing the image. Here's the actual image:

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Image shows up in my browser but then I would have it cached. I guess Postimage doesn't allow hotlinking, they want you to use their thumbnails. That does kind of make them useless as an image host, doesn't it?
