Title: California 170 to I-5 north: I love the new flyover!
Post by: hm insulators on January 13, 2014, 06:41:18 PM
I was in the Los Angeles area during Christmas and had an opportunity to use the nice new transition from the northbound 170 Freeway onto the 5. That new transition is definitely less of a bottleneck than the old one, which dumped you in the left lanes (which made the shift over to get at the 118 Freeway nerve-racking, to say the least). I love it!

Hopefully it won't become a traffic nightmare like the flyover from I-15 North to CA-91 West .

It was already similar to that connector, though it wasn't as much a problem. The issue I see is that, while 5N to 118E/W traffic doesn't have to weave, now 170N to 5N does to avoid the 118. One weave swapped for another.

I've always wondered what went wrong with that interchange.  it seems like it has good superelevation and sight lines; it's not in a particularly busy part of the city; and yet it is often the only red spot for miles on Google's traffic view.

Only a short dedicated thru lane for merging traffic, 2 lane ramps drops down to 1 just before the short merge ramp, plus there is alot of 91 traffic merging over to get to Main Street.

Fascinating to see the 170/5 junction take shape over the years.  Here's what it looked like over the weekend:

I haven't lived in California in years, but the 170-5-118 routing was a fairly frequent drive for me, since I lived in Hollywood and had cousins in Northridge.

Does anyone know if they plan to retain the left lane ramps as an access to the carpool lanes?

I ask because many of the old left lane entrances and exits in So Cal are slowly being closed, yet their placement are ideal to provide direct connectors to carpool lanes, so as to avoid people having to drive across traffic lanes to enter/exit the carpool lanes.

This is my first hearing of the project and it seems like they are doing a good job.

They are tearing the old flyover down, but building a new flyover for the carpool lanes in its footprint.
