I just happened to be on the Census Bureau's and came across the latest state estimates.

A few observations of note:
-Florida is poised to dethrone New York as the nation's third most populated state. What had been more than a half-million-person gap during the 2010 census has narrowed to just below 100k. A year from now, we could be talking about Florida being in third.
-Georgia just missed out on having 10 million people. They did move to #8 in 2012, surpassing Michigan.
-North Carolina is inching ever closer to moving Michigan down to #10.
At this rate, NJ will hit 9 million by 2017. Virginia is catching up, but for the next several years we're lodged securely in #11. (Fun side note: We passed NYC in the 1970s and they're almost a million behind us now.)

I wonder how many of those are New Yorkers relocating to Florida, a non-uncommon movement.
CA is now home to 38,332,521...we're still growing, despite the state's population hasn't grown as fast like we have in the past. Last year's estimate was 37,999,000 (close to 38 million), easy to figure out how many added to the state's population report: 333,521. To maintain a high population in a warm, arid climate throughout most of the state's landscape, we should take issue on water conservation and improvements in the water supply when reservoirs are lately shrinking from the 2 years of drought, esp. in the northern half of the state.
