Title: Albany - Changes for Northway (I-87) Exit 4 could finally be coming
Post by: Dougtone on February 26, 2014, 07:11:05 PM
There was a recent meeting regarding proposed upgrades from the Adirondack Northway (I-87 to those not familiar to the Albany, New York area) to the Albany International Airport in the Town of Colonie.  Changes would be made to upgrade the Exit 4 interchange as well as finally complete the missing Exit 3 with a more direct link to the airport.  Of course, the talk is that the construction would not take place until 2019.

Also, if you really want to read the draft EIS (along with the various pictures of construction alternatives), NYSDOT has the PDF file available for your viewing...

They certainly did.  Interstate 687 was supposed to connect at Exit 3 of Interstate 87.  Most of the land around where Interstate 687 was to built on the western side of the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 has never been developed and is an isolated spot of the Pine Bush.  The only portion of Interstate 687 that was ever built was the 3-lane overpass, ramps and a long 4-lane concrete stub at what is now Exit 5A on Interstate 90 which became Corporate Woods Blvd. about 30 years ago.  Unused Exit 5A was Park 'n' Ride for commuters in the early 1980s.
