This went up within the last week on I-87 North between exits 5 and 6 in Latham, NY, as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the Exit 6 overpass and nearby roads.

I've never seen this combination of large caps and small lowercase letters around here.
Oh boy, a new New York highway sign marvel for me to see. So I assume, that sign in the background is going to be replaced? Also that font looks a little ugly IMHO. I also see the exit tab a little to far off to the right like Florida does. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder what the originator of that spec is. There are some signs like that here in California in a construction zone on I-15 southbound, just south of Escondido. But they're temporary orange signs so I suppose they can be forgiven.
To me, it seems like a bastardization of the old California black guide sign font.

I saw this from the corner of my eye yesterday as I was driving southbound on the Northway, and I was thinking that the signs were fugly (yes, fugly). Since I was in a hurry to get to Binghamton, where I live these days, I didn't turn around for the photo. Oddly enough, the Getting There article in today's Times Union referred to these very signs.
I've seen some sign pictures from the NJ Turnpike that looked similar to this! I'll post if I find them again.

Probably just removed; NY has a nasty habit of leaving old signs up behind the new ones they add. I-490 in Rochester currently has two sets of signs for many exits between I-390 and the Inner Loop due to this.

I have seen this before, but only when using software to design guide sign panels. Usually, destinations are specified as having, for instance, 16" uppercase and 12" lowercase letters. This is a standard combination commonly used, so specifying the whole word to have that combination (i.e. one button)should show the message normally. To use the example of "Cohoes," if the "C" were specified as 16" uppercase, and the "ohoes" were specified
separately as 12" lowercase, the result is like what appears on the sign.
It's a long explanation, but somebody goofed in the sign shop, it appears.

I think I know what you're talking about, but I can't remember where they are.

I don't think there are any signs like this on the Turnpike. Parkway, I think so, though I don't remember offhand where.
Oh, it gets worse in regards to the signs regarding the Northway Exit 6 project...

Both photos taken by John Krakoff, yesterday.
I'd like to know the genius idea behind the making of these signs. Not only is Watervaliet spelled wrong.. the Albany Airport sign has two totally different fonts on it.
Another wonderous New York mess. :-P

Agreed on the font issues, but at least the ones I have seen do spell it all correctly, including Watervliet.
Yes, actually, I stand corrected.. that is the correct spelling. I always assumed there was another a in the word. But regardless, very shoddy sign work here.
Older NH signs have the font...

Not too much different, I guess, from what NY did with their parkways:

I got to see those signs and noticed they were different and looked weird while in NY last week. IMHO I'm not sure how to compare this to clearview

Sorry to resurrect such an old topic, but I noticed this morning that the fonts on these signs have been fixed. No more giant uppercase and tiny lowercase.

Don't apologize: it gives me the opportunity to ask how to pronounce "Watervliet" - "WAter-vly (rhymes with "fly")-it"? The Dutch would be something like "wah-ter-fleet."

The locals would say something like "wah-ter-vah-LEET" . Maybe someone else also familiar with the pronunciation can come up with a better phonetic for it.

My uncle who lives in Voorheesville pronounces it as "wah-ter-vleet."
