Brought up in chat while discussing freeway loops.
Northern NJ is surrounded by a loop of six Interstates: 80, 287, 87, 86 (count it as future), 84, 380. What is the highest number of Interstates that are needed to form such a loop? Note that the area enclosed must not be divided by any other Interstates. You can have a spur that ends inside the area. Autoroutes, Motorways, etc. in other countries count as well.

SoCal, in the future:
5 from 405 to 210 -> 210 east to San Bernardino -> 215 south to Temecula -> 15 south to 805 -> 805 south to 905 -> 905 west to 5 -> 5 north to the East Los Angeles Interchange -> 10 west to West Los Angeles -> 405 north to 5. Total of 9. Could get to 10 if the 710 gap is ever filled and the loop created involves it and the San Bernardino Freeway to 215.

For Chicago, the best you can get is fudging 6. Starting at the Circle, you have 90/94-55-294-88-290. But hey, that's entirely in one county (unless you want to get nit-picky about the Tri-State being on the county line).
I think the land area championship will be won out west.
Eastern Kentucky is surrounded by 75-640-40-81-77-64. Western Kentucky is corralled by 24-65-264-64-57. South central Kentucky is looped by 65-24-40-640-75-64-265. Northeastern Kentucky gets 75-64-77-70-270-71-275. Those all contain parts of other states. The only area in Kentucky completely surrounded by interstates, excepting portions of Louisville, is the so-called Golden Triangle.
This might not win anything, but Alaska has A1-A2-A4.
