Title: AASHTO Compliant Bike Lane Pictures Sought
Post by: talllguy on June 04, 2014, 03:28:56 PM
Greetings,

A friend is seeking a "high quality photograph of a properly installed but minimally AASHTO compliant" "conventional bike lane, adjacent to a parallel parked car lane". Link to post (http://www.evernote.com/shard/s5/sh/138cb4fa-ca04-4af1-95ad-6cb6a10d930d/67042d383d7a50f4169566709b73bcf0). His criteria is min 7' wide vehicle lanes and 5' bike lanes. What are those standards from by the way? MUTCD?

While he is seeking one for Baltimore, I bet it'd be neat to see some examples elsewhere.

I don't think there is an MUTCD standard for bike lane width.  AASHTO guidance is for a minimum 4ft bike lane.  AASHTO guidance on parking lanes with an adjacent bike lane is probably where the 12ft comes from, though that breaks down to an 8ft parking lane (AASHTO's recommended minimum) and a 4ft bike lane.

NATCO is what recommends a minimum 5ft bike lane width, but few jurisdictions follow the NATCO guidance.
