Title: Distance signs
Post by: ravensfan on July 10, 2014, 12:08:28 PM
I am relatively new here but not new to traveling on our roads.  I have taken dozens of pictures of signs over the years and one thing that intrigues me is when I see a sign that has some incredible distance listed on it, along with possible other control cities, but regardless I am most interested in signs that have a long distance.  For instance on US 50 at both ends, Ocean City MD and Sacramento CA there are signs there with distances to the other terminus.   Supposedly on I-40 in Wilmington NC there is a sign with distance to Barstow, CA but when I was there two weekends ago I couldn't find it even going slow a couple of times.  But if anyone knows of such signs anywhere whether on an interstate or US route I would very much be interested.  Thank you for any help in advance and I would love to see pictures if possible.

Do a search for "distance sign" and you'll find a lot of recent threads discussing this topic.

One of them is "Small Cities that are main mileage control point over 200 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=12341.0)", but there are many other angles discussed in other threads, including long distances shown on Interstate or U.S. route distance signs.

I wish our search engine was better.  I know for a fact we have had a thread on "ceremonial" distances, like the Ocean City, Sacramento, and Wilmington examples.

if you are in Baltimore, you can with an easy drive check out the distance sign on I-70 that mentions St. Louis and Cove Fort (its terminus).  I don't remember how many miles west of its beginning the sign is, but it's definitely not a long drive.

* btw, there is a sign in Barstow referencing (IIRC) 2640 miles to Wilmington.

I am familiar with the Wilmington NC/Barstow CA signs.  I was just in Wilmington trying to find the sign and I couldn't.  I even went into a convenience store and the clerk said it was about 1/8 mile up the road so I felt okay but still I couldn't find it!  I don't know what else to do I even called the police to get the specifics so I would know where to drive before I went there!   I am from Baltimore originally so I have the Cove Fort sign on the Beltway.  I don't think Cove Fort has a sign, which is odd!   Jealous that you are in San Diego.  That is such an awesome place from my 19 years of living in the Phoenix area it truly was a great place to live any time of the year, even more so in the summer!

you could attempt putting a query in Google along with "site:aaroads.com" and see if that turns up anything.

When I was in Wilmington a couple months ago, I also tried to find it but had no such luck. I wouldn't be surprised if it was removed or somehow obscured.

The sign kept getting stolen; NCDOT stop replacing it as a result.
