Post by: AHTD on July 10, 2014, 03:23:12 PM
Not REAL BIG news here, but we know enthusiasts will appreciate the tidbits:

Portions of U.S. 62 removed from the system:

412 was not unexpected: most if it had already transitioned by October last year.

Was 62 primarily a safety improvement?

U.S. 62 in this area was widened to five lanes with curb and gutter. The realignment accommodated the new construction better.

Of course, it also (a) aligns the 62 Spur intersection with the Walmart entrance on the other side, and (b) gives Carroll Electric Co-Op a little more land for its parking lot.

The system is on its way to getting smaller! One .5 mile at a time!

Now if only we could remove about another 6,000 miles!

Also, it has always struck me as a shame that US 62 has obliterated the town square in Berryville. They should rip that out and restore the downtown square. Call it traffic calming or something

So many towns in America wish they had town squares nowadays, and Berryville got rid of theirs. What a shame

Fayetteville tried to destroy theirs with "Urban Renewal".  71 actually ran through there until around 1950.

Unlike most other Arkansas town squares, I'm pretty sure Berryville's (formally called "Public Square", AFAIK a unique name in Arkansas) has always been empty in the middle -- though I'm not sure it was always split in two like it is now.  Berryville was founded in 1850, about 30 years before it became Carroll County's main seat (Eureka Springs was added a few years later); thus its square was almost certainly not intended to have the courthouse in the middle, unlike many other Arkansas town squares that are now courthouse-free (Fayetteville, Hamburg, Star City, probably Monticello).  The old Berryville courthouse has always been on the southwest side of the square; I'm pretty sure it was originally built when Berryville became the county seat.  (The courthouse itself moved just off the square in the 1970's to the former Carroll Electric Coop HQ; the old courthouse is now a museum.)

Fayetteville never had a courthouse on the Square. That was the Post Office.
