Title: Cities: Skylines-A True SimCity Slayer At Last?
Post by: DeaconG on August 15, 2014, 08:11:18 PM
Stumbled onto this at RockPaperShotgun, from the creators of Cities In Motion:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/15/simulated-urban-area-cities-skylines-announced/

I have had enough of Maxis/EA's continuing diss of the old school SimCity 4 players...I refused to touch that abortion called SimCity Societies and I won't deal with EA's botched "online" SimCity 2013 with it's odious Origin client/DRM.

Based on the early alpha footage, all I can say is...SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

The new SimCity makes me drool; the main reason I haven't bought it is I doubt I'll still be able to play it years down the road when the Origin servers turn off.

After writing the above, I checked out the Rock Paper Hotgun article and watched the teaser video.  EA can suck it; I've got a new game crush.

Last I heard (several months ago), EA was promising an update which would include "the impossible" off-line mode. I assume that patch still hasn't come out yet? I saw an expansion pack to SimCity at Wallyworld the other night and it had a message on the front warning about the online requirement. All-in-all, at least from the box graphics, this expansion pack wasn't nearly as enticing as the Rush Hour expansion pack was for SimCity 4.

That said, Cities in Motion: I think I am in love. :-o :coffee:

Save your money.  I picked it up at discount, and while it is somewhat fun, SC4 is still 10x better with way more customizable items for your city.

DaBigE, yes, the offline mode patch for SimCity has come out.  Still, with the small cities, and lack of being able to build Interstate like highways, not worth it really, evan at the discount price I paid for it.

Thanks for the info. Still getting plenty of mileage out of SimCity 4/Rush Hour. Good to know I can spend my money on other things instead of the SimCity "update".

The news just hit the Simtropolis site...and they're going nuts!

Oh EA, Paradox/Colossal Order is going to take ALL yer lunch money...

EDIT: I love this response from one of the devs on the Cities: Skylines forums-"Please let us develop the game a bit further from Alpha before throwing your money at us :D"

I have Cities in Motion 2. It's a great game, mainly because you have a very versatile map editor to use that makes making dream cities very easy. I posted screenshots before of it, but here's a some anyway:

The dev team have put up a set of YouTube videos showing the alpha gameplay...nice, very nice. They can't take my money away soon enough...

Gameplay infrastructure:

Basic roadbuilding and zoning mechanics:

Water mechanics and happiness:

Looks like they're doing it the right way!

Looking great so far!  Looks like it could be the Sim City 4 killer finally!

I just hope we will be able to do the 'Big Dig' in it. :D

Colossal Order has released a set of new videos showcasing the game:

Services And Policies Gameplay #1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Looks like it's progressing well, though their decision to not have medium density zoining doesn't exactly push my buttons, they haven't ruled out introducing it at a later date.
