Title: CHiPs coming to ME-TV
Post by: Mergingtraffic on August 23, 2014, 10:31:01 PM
CHiPs is coming back to TV on ME-TV starting on September 1st.

As a kid I loved the freeway scenes as I heard some were shot on the new unopened freeways back then. That's why some had no lines.  lol

Part of the opening, where the "introduce" the two main characters, is on I-210 going the wrong direction. This is the "close up" view part in the credits. Section is the 210 just west of State 118 on the eastbound lanes. They are traveling westbound.

Didn't they also use part of the 2 freeway as well?

Yes, I've seen the 2 used in at least a couple episodes, one showed the signs at the 210 interchange.

I've watched that opening countless times since I was a kid watching midmorning CHiPs reruns on TNT, and I can't believe I never noticed that!

Yes, unopened sections of I-210 was their primary freeway "set"  for the first few seasons. If you watch closely, they reuse a lot of the same spots over and over again. You see them pull over Broderick Crawford and think: That's the very same place where Rosey Grier ripped apart his Honda 600.

They did use the CA 2/I-210 interchange a lot, especially in the first season, and particularly the NB to WB ramp with its box-like concrete overpass. They often used it in the wrong direction, too.

CHiPs will always be a secret favorite of mine, but as a roadgeek and now being familiar with Southern California, the continuity issues are painfully obvious. They'll give their location as something like "Northbound Harbor Freeway at Washington" , and yet they'll be in a way out in the foothills.

Does anyone know what interchange the station used in Chips was located at?  I remember it was within a freeway interchange on a surface street as it was typical Southern California where the ramps were built around existing homes and businesses and in the case there they built the flyovers to the back of the station house.

That's the CHP Central LA station, which is still there at 777 W Washington Blvd. The station is in the SW quadrant of the I-10/I-110 interchange just southwest of downtown.

Yes, just not "Marina Del Rey".

However, if you are in the Marina Del Rey area, and you love Italian cuisine, then C & O Trattoria (literally at the west end of Washington Blvd.) is a must visit.

BTW, the original CHP station seen on the show was razed many years back, replaced by a larger, more modern building at the same location.

Now, if the TV show "Emergency!" is your cup of tea, The original home of Squad 51 still stands in real life as Station 127/Robert Cinader Memorial Station -- Cinader helped create Emergency! --  in Carson, CA:

I was born in 1988, so I am just getting into this show. I always used to wonder what "CHiPs" was, when I saw those California City & California Pines infomercials with Erik Estrada back in the late 1990s & early 2000s, until my dad told me it stands for California Highway Patrol. lol, I thought it was a show about potato chips.

 I loved that episode "Aweigh We Go", where Ponch & Jon were assigned to the truck scales on Interstate 5 in Valencia (near Six Flags). There was a scene where they pass under a overhead sign that showed Bakersfield as a control city.

But it took CalTrans much longer to replace the freeway signs.  I was a big fan of the original "CHiPS", and also remember watching the TV movie "CHiPs 2000" with my nephew.  The movie was essentially a remake of the first "CHiPS" episode with a few changes - Getraer was now CHP Commissioner, and Jon now had Getraer's job.  Watching the movie, I kept noticing how all the signs were the same - albiet older - as in the original show.

How long did those large, solid-panel sign gantries last?  I enjoy them bevause they are a step more modern version of the similar items that are/were on the New Jersey Turnpike.

I read some of the signs and looked up the locations on Google Maps, but they were gone.

A lot of those solid gantries still exist on I-210 and State 2.

If by "solid-panel sign gantries" you mean this...

There are still plenty in the S.F. Bay Area on I-280, I-680, US 101, CA-85 and CA-24 to name a few however, this type of gantry was removed from Caltrans' standard plans recently so you won't see any new installations.

Those are the ones, except on CHiPs they don't have those funny future cars under them.  The one road I caught the name of was 210, and I looked up the spot and they were gone.
