Title: Coke Life - it's official
Post by: mcdonaat on September 02, 2014, 12:49:36 AM
Coke Life is being rolled out across the Coke Belt (NC, Fla, GA, and SC) through a partnership with Fresh Market. Who wants to send me some, so I won't have to drive to Florida? Just kidding...

If anyone has picked some up, what are your responses? Is it good, bad, stronger or weaker than regular Coke, way better or way worse than DPSG's TEN line or Pepsi Next? Would you choose it over regular Coke if priced similarly?

Just for clicks, here's a link to the list, with a handy map.

Not necessarily - it's a mix between the two, but not like Coke C2. Stevia's natural, unlike sucralose or aspartame, but it has zero calories. Pepsi Next and Coke Zero both taste weak to me, but 7up and A&W TEN both taste pretty close to the regular formulas. Coke Zero tastes like Coke, but flat Coke. Diet Coke has its' own unique flavor.

I'm guessing Coke Life is original formula Coke (original meaning pre-HFCS) but with Stevia replacing some of the sugar.

"Tastes like an aluminum can, even out of a plastic bottle!"

Diet Coke to me tastes like warm Coke, even when cold.  Not pleasant.  I just can't get past that tinny bitterness of aspartame.

(Just curious, when did we all stop calling it Nutrasweet?)

And after mid-October, if it's successeful, do they plan to sell Coke-Life in others States and Canada?

A bit off-topic, I spotted this post about Stevia on another forum

Coke, and Pepsi, tried this a couple of years ago.  Coke's was called "C2".  The Market rejected it, as it is rejecting the 10 line from Dr Pepper, because people either want a diet drink or a non-diet drink.  Not a half-diet drink.  The Stevia angle is just a gimmick and won't work either.  People that fall for the "natural" scam (dog feces, arsenic, and vomit are all "natural") are not going to drink soda pop in the first place.

This is an example of the strawberry - banana Jello marketing theory.  Jello makes something like 50 flavors, but 95% of the sales are from just 8.  The worst seller is strawberry - banana mix.  Why do they make it?  Because as the market leader, they know the store will carry every flavor, and that the store only has so much space for gelatin.  Thus pushing other brands out of the store.  This is why Coke and Pepsi come up with 50 variations on the same thing.

Non-Diet/Zero beverages made by Coca Cola in the UK, except Coca Cola itself, use sweeteners to reduce sugar content (so they are half-sugared, cut with cheap sugar-substitutes).

Coca Cola UK claim this cutting with sweetners doesn't affect taste, but Coca Cola Life (released in the UK) is a different brand as in they don't want to affect the taste of original Cola (which is the only drink they make that isn't cut).

Coca Cola Life uses a different sweetener to the rest, so while it will affect taste, it may not provoke a bad reaction in my body.

Please advise on which sweetener will not result in people telling me it causes cancer in lab rats.  I drink a lot of aspartamed beverages, and I would like to think that it won't be soda that will ultimately put me in a pine box.

As far as I know, cane and beet sugar.  I'd rather skip the HFCS, thankyouverymuch.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no point in drinking diet soda. Diet Coke is worse for you than regular.
Diet sodas pretty much all taste like crap. This means you lose the primary reason for drinking it in the first place, the good taste.
Notice how many very obese people drink diet soda, and they aren't losing any weight. (granted there are other reasons for this as well)

My point, either drink regular soda, or if you are on a health kick, none at all.

I have drank Diet Coke for so long that I cannot stand the sweet taste of regular Coke. To me, Coke Zero tastes just like regular Coke, therefore it is an unacceptable substitute. I like the taste of Diet Coke and cannot stand Diet Pepsi. It, to me, is also an unacceptable substitute.

I enjoy carbonated beverages because I like the carbonation. I am not a fan of plain water. Some of the flavored carbonated waters that are available at Walmart or Dollar General are good.

If I drank as much regular pop as I do Diet Coke, I'd weigh lots more than I do now.

See, I don't like people comparing soda to obesity, because I've been drinking soda for about... let's see, about 14 years now, at least one every day, and all throughout my life I've been told I was underweight. I am. I'm barely 130 pounds when I'm practically 6'0 and 20 years old. Factor in my fast-food diet (has slowed down a bit) that included up to 4 nights of fast food per week, and the fact that I was almost always inside sitting on my ass playing video games, I should probably weigh close to 450 pounds. But I don't. I'm underweight despite what I seem to do. And now that I started exercising, guess what - I'm losing more weight that I barely had in the first place! So, either my metabolism is on crack-cocaine speed or I'm just lucky. Either way, I have other health problems that most likely resulted from these practices that I'm trying to correct so...

Yeah, whether or not you like it, this kind of consumption correlates with obesity and diabetes.  You can get away with a lot of things when you're young that aren't good long-term choices as an adult.  You can smoke as a teen, for example, and your face won't start wrinkling prematurely, but at 35, you're doing irreversible damage.

And really, isn't your body worth taking the best care of as early as you can?  We're not talking onerous restrictions here, just making healthy eating choices.  It's all the rage.

You're 20. Your metabolism is gonna slow down in 3-4 years, probably. I've probably gained 40 pounds since I was 20 by simply not modifying my diet.

Yep. I may have gained "the freshman 15" total over my entire 4 years of undergrad, but I then gained "the office job 30" within two years of graduation.

I actually have found I really like things that use Stevia.  I actually am trying to gain weight, but also be mindful of sugar intake because my dad is Type II Diabetic and my tests are often borderline.  Aspartame tastes weird to me and is of questionable health effects so I try to avoid it.  Acesulfame K doesn't seem to be too bad, but I like the concept of Stevia being something natural and not synthesized.  So I'd be excited to try Coke Life (except for carbonated water puts me in pain).  I believe it's 2/3 sugar, 1/3 Stevia.  Also, I wanted to note that if you are replacing sugar with Stevia, you should use about 2 packets of Stevia for every 3 packets of sugar -- Stevia seems to be sweeter per gram.

As for the metabolism, Zeffy, I have a similar one.  However, at 24, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.  If I had a dollar for everytime someone says, "Oh you're so lucky to be skinny no matter what you eat..."  Well, yes, but certainly with a cost.  I'm 5'10"/102  (Was 120 until a recent 5-month flare).  Was down to 97 in the hospital the other week, but have clawed some pounds back.

It's just branded as "Sierra Mist" now, dropping the "Natural" part, but keeping the sugar instead of HFCS.

The rap on HFCS is just another symptom of people's willingness to fall for junk science.  There is no real evidence that either anyone can, in a truly scientific test, tell the difference; nor that it has any health effects different from "real" sugar.

You eat and drink too much, you get fat. Pretty much that simple.

Metabolize different? Sure, I agree with you. The science shows it's the same health-wise as sucrose. But taste wise there's a HUGE difference between sucrose and HFCS.

The Market rejected it, as it is rejecting the 10 line from Dr Pepper, because people either want a diet drink or a non-diet drink.

Wasn't Dr. Pepper Ten the one marketed as being "not for women"? I think that explicitly shunning a solid 50% of your potential customer base with your marketing is probably higher up there on the list of reasons why Dr. Pepper Ten is failing than anything to do with the actual product.

Dr. Pepper 10 was OK, but Diet Dr. Pepper actually true to advertising tastes pretty close to regular Dr. Pepper, so I'm not sure a mid-grade version is even necessary.

I prefer HFCS Coke to sugar Coke. It has a smoother taste instead of a grainier taste. It's hard to describe but I know what I like. The problems with HFCS are twofold: one, it makes us grow a lot of corn, which is a terrible crop to grow and displaces our staple crops, which increases prices all around and puts more of our tax dollars into corn subsidies instead of letting farmers grow things that the market really demands. Two, I forget exactly why, but you end up consuming more sugar through HFCS products than sugar products. Something either about the HFCS hides the sweetness so you eat more sugar per sweetness unit, or that some chemical coming out of the corn stimulates you to want to eat more than cane sugar does. I think.
I know people who won't eat HFCS. I don't care. But I don't eat artificial colors or flavors by and large, and most people do. And I definitely won't eat any ingredients that I haven't heard of.

It's also becoming very difficult to grow corn whose genes do not contain the "intellectual property" of large agribusiness, making small farmers financial vassals of those firms by simple shifts in the pollen-carrying wind.  Corn is a dirty business that keeps a lot of rich lawyers rich.
