The worst place is Ciudad Juárez, according to the news. That's right across the Rio Grande to El Paso, which is quite a distance to the west.
how bad was it, Matt? Any odd experiences?
I am considering taking a friend across the border from San Diego, to Tijuana and Ensenada. But of course I'd like to remain un-decapitated.

all of my family have passport cards, Acuña is one of the safest border cities in Mexico/Texas.

At the US Port of Entry they had a check where they told you to turn off the engine, pop the hood, and open the trunk. this explains the hour wait we had, also they have a new Port of Entry, so you have to get off the original road and go off the old truck port, and they have about eight lanes they only have six open and it gets busy during lunch time. It wasn't bad, but i did see police gang/drug teams in the back of two trucks, they all had black clothes, covered faces, SWAT armor, and all had assult rifles

didn't run into anyone with black uniforms. Just blue ones (Federal Police, I think) going in at the border, and tan ones (military) on a checkpoint on highway 3. Both times they were completely courteous and professional.
hell, even the US border patrol didn't give us any trouble!
Just a warning - getting from I-5 to MX 1D is a bit tricky. It is easy to miss turns in Tijuana. I remember in my 2005 trip we got lost both ways. I think things have changed since then, but still...

yep, still accurate as of August, 2009 - we had a hell of a time getting from I-5 through downtown Tijuana to the 1-D toll road.
I'm thinking of taking route 2 from Palomas, Son. (just across from Columbus, NM) to its eastern end and crossing back into the US at Brownsville/Matamoros.
I spotted a interesting detail along the dry bed of the Tijuana River, it seems they put a sort of main freeway lanes-local lanes on each side of the river

Ah, so that's what 'I-5' does now!
This is the town where the movie El Mariachi was filmed. Town looks a lot nicer than Tijuana.
I spotted this thread about a 2nd level on the Periferico Freeway in Mexico http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=350994 there a couple of good pictures there
Those are some cool pics of the new freeway in Mexico City. One of the signs has for an exit "Barranca del muerto" which translates as Ravine of the dead!!
I don't want to take that exit!! :ded:
