Title: What kind of car do you have? (Part II)
Post by: golden eagle on December 14, 2014, 07:51:32 PM
The original topic was one of the first ones I made when I came here five years ago. Anyhow, I still have the 2005 Honda Civic, and it's the only one I own.

Edited to add in view of subsequent replies: All have manual shifts.

Since I didn't post in the previous thread:  1994 Saturn SL2, "Cronos" (approximately 139,000 miles--odometer is frozen at 127,642 miles since the petroleum-based lubricant put on the urethane gears at the factory softened the teeth, allowing them to be stripped over time; new gears are just $50 but installation involves complete disassembly of the IP cluster).  Previous cars:  1986 Nissan Maxima, "Rosie" (56,000 miles when I got her, 227,000 miles when she left my possession); 1978 Chevrolet Impala, no name (5,000 miles when I got it, 20,000 miles when it was sold).

I have never owned a car with manual transmission.  The Maxima was the first car I owned with air conditioning and cruise control, which I consider musts for both in-town driving and highway cruising.  It was also the first with rear discs and alloy wheels; I prefer alloys for looks and reduced unsprung weight, and I don't like even self-adjusting rear drums because they add to NVH.  The Saturn is the first car I have had with antilock brakes, a driver's airbag, and traction control.

No two of my cars have had engines with the same cylinder count and layout, or valvetrain arrangement.  The Impala had the 4.1-L (250 CID) OHV inline six, which has admirers in some quarters but was sluggish in such a large car.  The Maxima had a 3.0-L SOHC V-6 (the famous Nissan VG30E which still survives in pickups) and the Saturn has a 1.9-L DOHC inline four.

I have 3 black manual Honda Preludes: a 1993 that I bought in 2012 to replace a wrecked one, a 2001* that I bought in January, and a 1991 that my dad traded me in February. I use the 1993 for daily transportation as it has the best gearing and most durable engine (the F22A1 was also used in the 1990-93 Accord and is known for being one of Honda's most reliable engines ever made), the 2001 is my project car and gets driven in good weather, and the 1991 is currently in my garage and will remain so until 2016, when it can get antique plates. It'll mainly be used for special occasions and shows, especially after restoration.

*2001 was the last model year for the Prelude, but it was produced almost all the way through that year; there are a few known with October 2001 manufacturing dates, which would imply that they're 2002 models in the US, but the VIN indicates the model year as 2001. Mine is one such car, having been manufactured in September 2001. Most of these late-year 2001s weren't sold until well into 2002, with a handful remaining unsold until 2003!

Pre-adult:

1982 Aries K - Hand-me-down from parents while in high school.  Nothing to write home about
1986 or 87 Reliant - reward for partial college scholarship.  Was OK.  Didn't have it that long because Dad noticed I was having trouble getting up at the crack of noon.
1984 Chevette - this was a terrible car...clutch cable which ran underneath most of the length of the car would slowly twist over time and the clutch petal would reach the point it couldn't be pressed.

Adult:
1989 Chevy Cavalier - was OK but leaked a lot (rainwater) after being rear ended.  Put 180k miles on it.
1996 Saturn SL - terrific car.  Engine rebuild at 150k miles due to defect that would've been free to fix had the mileage been <100k.  Saturn paid half.  Got 315k miles total before parting ways, including the original manual clutch.
2004 Chevy Cavalier - absolutely no trouble with this car.  Had to part with it after 203k miles when I crashed into a deer going 55 mph.
2009 Saturn Aura - only real problems with this car related to the brake-related recalls (symptoms appeared 3 yrs before recall).  Currently has 206k miles on it.

Ugh!  My 1994 SL2 has the oil-burning problem, but I am hoping to nurse it along without too much piston-soak voodoo since I am not running high miles these days.

current fleet:

'73 VW Karmann Ghia - my wife's daily driver.  99.9K on the odometer, unless she's rolled it over to 00000 already.  she may have.
'86 Honda CRX - my daily driver.  234,361 on the odometer as of me getting to work this morning.
'95 Toyota Pickup 4x4 - for off-roading and/or getting crap at Home Depot.  251K.
'97 Ford Taurus - our only four-seater, in case both in-laws need to be acquired at the airport.  also our only automatic transmission.  179,992 on the odometer as of this morning.

previous vehicles owned:
'90 Mitsubishi Galant - bought in 2003.  drove immediately from Boston to LA, not a single problem.  then when I got home, it promptly fell apart.  I took it from 59K to 76K on the odometer before getting $1 trade-in value.
'02 Ford Mustang - bought in 2004, 27K on the odometer.  wrecked in Florida by idiot making a left turn from the right lane.  99,972 on the odometer.  I walked away from a 75mph collision with nothing more than a minor airbag burn; not bad.
'99 Honda Civic - bought in 2006 with 69K miles; wrecked in Fort Worth by red-light runner, 100,041 on the odometer.  just after having driven through Dealey Plaza.
'88 Volvo 240 - something like 280K on the odometer; transmission went nearly immediately (lost 2nd gear, not good in an automatic), but I still got about 6 months of daily commute before donating it to the American Heart Association or whoever.
'01 Ford Taurus - got with 107K on the odometer, head gaskets went at 176K and blew the engine.  I sold it in Tijuana, of all places.  it had a Mexico vehicle importation on it, so I had to get it towed across the border, the importation cancelled, at which point I sold it to the tow truck driver for $500.  minus $120 towing fee, I netted $380 cash.  car is probably still tooling around Baja with a new engine.

I currently drive a 2011 Nissan Altima, "Suki", 96,000 km (60,000 mi). Manual, mid-range model (newer manuals are hard enough to find; newer base models are rare as pope poop due to ridiculous 8+ year financing plans that people fall for).

Prior cars (both manual base models):
2004 Pontiac Sunfire, "Blitz", bought in 2009 at 80,000 km (50,000 mi), sold to my best friend (who's a mechanic) at 280,000 km (170,000 mi) due to general unreliability (worn through the second set of front struts, 5th set of control arm bushings, had both the clutch slave cylinder and the alternator go within a year of each other, it was on its third battery, the ventilation/heating system was making a concerning noise and the clearcoat had begun to peel in places, and rust was starting to eat at other places. I just didn't trust that car for long distance trips anymore, and it wasn't even ten years old.

1992 Honda Civic DX Hatchback, "Boomer", bought in 2008, mileage unknown above 210,000 km (131,000 mi) according to SAAQ (DMV) records, the odometer having been rewound to 147,000 (92,000) by a shady dealer. Spoiler and fart can added by my brother during a short period of shared ownership. A surprisingly reliable and smooth driver for such an old, beat up car, but no amount of grinding and repainting (primer + industrial rustproof paint applied generously with a brush) would tackle the rampant rust problem. Started getting electrical problems (ground cable snapped, voltage regular started acting up resulting in a burned up battery, etc.) and found out that the brake lines AND parking brake cable all had to be redone. Got the Sunfire and loaned the Civic to my brother who proceeded to beat the shit out of it (including going on drag strips without telling me) until its A1, well maintained and preserved drivetrain became shit. Sold in 2009 for five fiddy after a few repairs.

My current cars are the same as in the first thread, but with a lot more mileage:

2008 Toyota Prius - over 187k miles
2006 Nissan Titan pickup truck - over 130k miles

The most miles I got out of any of my former cars is over 282k (acquired at about 102k) for my 1982 Honda Accord, and over 194k (acquired new) for my 1996 BMW 328i.  Those also were the only cars I ever named ("Blue Bomber" and "Yuppie Scum-mobile" respectively).

October 1987 to February 1993 - 1984 Ford Tempo - "Son Of Buick" (reference to parent's 1975 Buick Century wagon I traded in towards the car)

I have a 2004 Jaguar S-Type which is coming up to 150k miles. I used to drive new 4-pot diesels but I lost a terrible amount in depreciation on my last one and the peaky powerband, all or nothing turbo lagged power delivery, got a bit frustrating in the end. The Jag, even though thirstier, is working out a lot more cost effective. In the 18 months I've had it the only problem has been the heater control panel which due to poor design ended up burning out. Other than that I can beat the official 22mpg (UK) fuel rating by some way. 32mpg is regularly achieved with the best being 38mpg (31 US/gal).

current car: 2013 Mazda CX-5
wife's car: 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

former cars:
Sept 2010 to Oct 2012: 2010 Mazda CX-7 (Met an untimely end due to a very old man who though he could turn despite my car approaching in the opposite lane)
March 2003 to Sept 2010: 2003 Mazda Protege 5
June 1997 to March 2003: 1994 Saturn SC1
Aug 1990 to June 1997: 1980 Pontiac Sunbird (affectionately referred to as "The Bird")
May 1990 to July 1990: 1985 Dodge Omni (Met an untimely end due to me leaving the keys while away with my folks, and my brother's stupid unlicensed friend deciding to take it for a joyride and an eventual high speed chase due to said lack of license)
Dec 1989 to May 1990: 1983 Datsun Sentra (sold because the insurance company was convinced that my hatchback Datsun (not Nissan) Sentra was a sports car, and wanted to charge my then 17-year old self an inflated rate as a result)

You've got to kidding me.  Was you insurance company local?  I would have showed the agent a pic of the car.
The original Sentras (which replaced the old Datsun 210) were tin-can econoboxes.  Maybe, he thought that every Datsun/Nissan was a 280-ZX.

2003 Ford Explorer Sport (mine, semi-retired, our "run to the home center to get stuff" car)
2014 Ford Escape (wife's, and our "weekend and trip" car)

Previous cars (both of us):
1998 Mercury Villager minivan
1995 Ford Explorer Sport
1991 Ford Ranger - Sold to wife's nephew in 1998, still running (barely) with just over 300K on the clock.
1989 Ford Bronco II
1983 Ford Ranger
1980 Ford Fiesta (1 each - we had "his and hers" for a while).  Best handling snow cars ever.
1978 Ford Mustang II
1977 Ford F-150 pickup
1976 or 77 Ford Mustang II coupe - g/f's (now wife) hand-me-down beater from her sister.  Engine died a horrible death due to lack of coolant (long story, not my fault.  :) )
1974 Ford Mustang II fastback  - Totaled in 1977 when someone ran a red and t-boned me.
1974 AMC Gremlin
1972 Ford Pinto hatchback - Worst car by far of the entire lot. Only lasted 53K miles.
1968 Ford Mustang - Bought used (very) from my mom, used as my commuter car until it died.
1966 Ford Cortina
1957 Chevy Bel-Air 4-door sedan - Bequeathed to me for one summer by the lady across the street when I was in high school.  6-cyl/auto, the slowest car of the lot.

You no doubt notice a trend towards Fords. I'm the only male in my family who wasn't a Ford lifer.  All the new ones from 1974 on have been "A/Z Plan" employee discount purchases.

What did the Mustangs and the pickup have in them? We had a '75 and a '78 Mustang when I was a kid. The '78 had a V6 and was totally gutless but the '75 had a 302 and would scream. The perfect car for smoking the rear tires. Also, I had a '77 F100 pickup with a 302 and a 3 speed manual on the floor. It originally came out with an automatic, but some previous owner replaced it with the 3 speed and they didn't put the right shifter in, so you had to shift a certain way to get into 2nd gear. I was the only one who could drive it.

The 74 and 77 Mustang IIs were the 2.8L V6 with a 4-speed manual.  Decently quick but no speed demons.  The 76/77 (can't recall which) that my wife had briefly was the stock 4-cylinder with an auto trans.  Slower than slow, especially after my sister-in-law got done beating it to death.

The 68 had a 302 and was an excellent tire-smoker.  :)

The pickup had a 351W with a Borg-Warner T18 4-speed manual.  1st gear was too low to be useful in normal traffic (something like 6.32:1), so I normally started in 2nd (3:1 ratio).  Not real fast off the line but after about 25 MPH it ran pretty good.

Currently driving a 2001 Mercedes SLK 230 with six-speed transmission. It just went over 130,000 miles on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Previous cars (a couple of times I overshot where I wanted to stop for a sign photo, so my car made photos that ended up on the site):

1999 Dodge Avenger - it went from Delaware to San Diego (leading to a clinch of I-80) and then to Florida (and a clinch of I-10). I gave it to my brother in 2012 at 163,000 miles, he still drives it:

1994 Chevy Cavalier - took me to San Diego from Delaware, with a clinch of I-70. Alternator went on it again and was getting the Avenger, so I donated it to KSDS San Diego:

1978 Toyota Celica - learned how to drive manual transmission in this. The car was my friend's that was sitting at our mechanic's broken down. I got the car roadworthy again but only drove it for two months before I ended up giving it back when I got the Cavalier:

1989 Chevy Cavalier - Liked this car a lot and drove it for four years. Blew an engine at Exit 70 on I-85 northbound in Alabama:

1985 Mercury Cougar - Got it in high school but only had it for two years. Lots of problems with it due to a bad mechanic.

Ah, the infamous "granny gear" 4 speed, which was functionally a 3 speed with an ultra low first gear that was useful only for pulling heavy loads on trailers.  I've driven quite a few of them in my day. I've also driven some trucks with a 3 speed on the column, the equally infamous "3 on the tree". I eventually want an old truck with a 6 cylinder and a 3 on the tree. Those were real trucks, unlike the heated leather seated behemoth luxobarges that are sold now. They were simple, honest, and hard working. And a lot better looking than new trucks.

Yep, that's the one.  1st gear was good for push-starting cars but that's about all I ever used it for.

I learned to drive a stick on my uncle's farm truck when I was 14 or so, a well-used olive green 1957 F-100, six-banger, 3-speed column shifter with a lot of play in it.  I wish that truck was still around; it was fun to drive after I got the hang of it.

Work - they often pick one of four Chevy impalas - year varies - one has a column shift - others floor shift automatic.  if they exhaust these, I'm stuck with my car.

2013 Hyundai Elantra. I'm less than a few hundred miles from 25,000 already. The commute from the city to the 'burbs is mostly to thank for that, and the long drives out into the country is the other reason for that.

I know the feels. We have a 2011 Elantra with 62,000 miles on it. 30 miles commute to work (plus 30 back) Monday to Friday, plus plenty of weekend driving. Never a quiet day at our house.

As for the car, so far so good. BUT, the MPG has been pretty lackluster since we bought it (back when they advertised 29-40) -- I max out in the low 30s, and with my lead foot, average about 26. Next car is probably gonna be a diesel given the insane amount of freeway driving we do. What kind of MPG figures have you been managing?

30 years ago, Hyundai was garbage. 20 years ago, they were significantly better. 10 years ago they were almost there. Today, they are just as good as most makes and better in some ways. They're a good value as well. A friend of mine has had two turbo Sonatas and loved them. The overrated mileage fiasco was a bit of a black eye, but they are the smart man's car. You did very well.

302. Was a very light blue and like most T-Birds of that era, the flip-open headlights were always flipped open. Other than that, it was quite trouble-free for the time I had it. One day while at work, the wife traded it in on the '93 Geo Storm. Still not totally happy about that. ;)

Your story with your 2013 Hyundai Elantra sounds almost exactly like mine.  The only difference is I only recently cracked 22,000.  It would even less if I could avoid making bi-monthly trips to Lincoln, not to mention my recent trip to Clear Lake, Iowa.

It was a four cylinder automatic, but that year of Accord even had bad automatics in the four banger, and despite meticulous flushing of the transmission fluid it was starting to shift rough on occasion, so that was part of the decision. I'm really happy to have a stick again on the VW.

Yep, most Hondas and Acuras of that general era (1997-2003) had bad automatic transmissions, especially the V6s and/or those that had SportShift (the Tiptronic-style manually shiftable automatic). The 1999-2003 Acura TL and CL, the 5th gen Prelude (particularly 1997 and 1998, before a slight improvement in 1999-2001 models), and the Odyssey (not sure which years) are up there with the V6 Accords of that era. Unfortunately there was no manual available for the V6s then.

SXT, 3.8 l

Purchased as-is off the lot in Mount Vernon, Illinois, without the dealer having even inspected or cleaned it yet, back in 2007; it had just arrived earlier that day. Now, eight years later, we're just about to turn over 190,000 miles.

The windshield is currently covered in cardboard, a blanket, and wooden panels secured with ratchet straps. Tennis ball-sized hail and a tornado have been reported 30 to 40 miles away and heading straight for Wichita.

Yep, but the Lincoln is as good as sold. It was a daily driver.  The Monte was bought as a show car but I am not one to take cars to shows so it is a pleasure car.  The Corvette I bought new fresh out of college.  It needs a paint job and has very low miles.  I'll sell the Monte to pay for a quality paint job on the Vette.  I put about 15,000 miles a year on the made in the USA Honda VTX motorcycle touring North America, the van gets about 20,000 on it per year, the Challenger 10,000.  We are road warriors.  Truck is only used local as it already has 213,000 on it but the A/c works as does everything else.  When my girls were at home we had 2 more cars plus a travel trailer.

No I am not wealthy, retired school teacher plus second jobs, and my parents were poor.  I have always liked anything with an engine.  Yes, that is my vice.   Before starting a family (at a later age) and even in college I almost always had at least two vehicles.  At one time I owned two nice cars, a pickup, travel trailer, two relatively new street legal motorcycles, and a nice boat. All were tagged and insured.  Never understood why I had to pay for liability on all the vehicles when I was the only driver.

My wife was raised by a "car guy" so there is no hope for me.

I am a member of a Saturn enthusiasts' forum and there are a few hoarders who have been told off by their HOAs for having too many Saturns parked in their driveways.  While I can easily see myself becoming a two- or even three-car guy, my personal rule is not to buy any cars other than my daily driver unless I have the ability to garage them.  This is why I have only toyed with the ideas of getting a 1994 Saturn Homecoming Edition, a Lexus LS 400, etc.

The only car collector in my neighborhood whom I know actually has a 1920's/1930's-vintage Ford (I think a Model A) has a barn in the country for his cars, which he reportedly picked up for cheap when he handled probate for the former owner's estate.

I forgot we have a small utility trailer also.

Our yard is small on two sides, zero lot line on one side, but in the front is a three car drive with room for 5 or 6 cars plus the garage with a large gravel area to the side of the drive.  Our house is back in a corner of a strange arrangement of drives off of a short street.  Ours is the only single family dwelling in three blocks.  The others are either duplexes or triplexes (aka, "garden homes").

It pisses off the neighbors because their places have almost no yard and at best a two car garage with short drives.  The parking is why we bought it plus there is a small farm with horses behind us and green belt with a creek beside us.  This in the middle of a town with about 70,000 and part of the DFW metroplex.

The Lincoln sold.  I have a collector interested in the Monte.  I have been looking at a second motorcycle. :hmmm:  I may have to come out of retirement.

If that's the case, that's the first time I've heard of an agreement that specifically singles out one particular brand.
Maybe they should just piss off the neighbors more by parking a bunch of Yugos in their driveways instead.

Current: 2011 Nissan Sentra, purchased used in 2014
Previous: 2009 Ford Focus, purchased new in 2009, sold in 2014

Those are the only two cars that have ever been "mine". In my first three years of having a drivers' license from 2006-2009, I did not own a car.

My parents meanwhile are stuck in an infinite loop of each leasing a new Nissan every three years. My father is on his sixth Sentra (his fiifth is now mine), my mother is on her third Murano and had three Quests before that. Adding to the absurdity, my sister also has a Sentra. When I go visit, the driveway looks a little amusing with four Nissans all lined up in it. :-D

PHLBOS, I like the Yugo idea.  I always liked the old country of Yugoslavia anyway.

I traveled by VW Beetle through there in 1968 while attending college in Munich (military brat).  Great time and the people were great.  As a matter of fact my buddy and I were in Belgrade the day the Russians rolled the tanks into Prague.  We were trying to sell a bottle of US whiskey on the black market.  Upon hearing of the "invasion" we hit the road south.

Many years I later bought a dinning set I discovered was made in Yugoslavia.

So three or four Yugos in my drive would be proper.  I bet I could get them cheap.

2005 Chevy Suburban (half ton); 4WD; lots of options, but I generally use it as a truck, so it's a shame that to get nice sound system and moonroof, I had to get an upgraded interior, which I pretty much trashed taking stuff to the dump in its first few months of my ownership. Found it unsold in the upper reaches of a dealer's garage in mid 2006, and got a fine deal. Also a 2007 Chevy HHR, which was designed after original Suburbans, and can also hold several pieces of 8' lumber with the hatch closed. Zero options, so it has a stick shift (and gets "slightly" better mileage than the Sub). For reasons I don't understand, some friends refer to the HHR as "the little truck", and the Sub as "the station wagon".
