Title: Are you working Christmas/New Years, 2014?
Post by: ZLoth on December 21, 2014, 02:11:20 AM
Yup, it's the annual "Are you working during the Christmas/New Years holidays?" thread. I would imagine that there are people whose last "work" day of the year was December 19th, and they won't be seen or heard from again until Monday, January 5th. However, there will be people working through the holiday break, and, yes, even on Christmas Day and New Years.

I created this thread partially because of the complaint that retail workers had to work Thanksgiving, and my response is that there are other people who have to work the holidays who aren't in critical roles. After all, there are some restaurants open for Christmas dinner, casinos, movie theaters, gas stations, hotels, resorts, and cruise ships. Not to mention television and radio stations, cable companies, and such.

So, are you working through the holidays?

Thankfully, no.  My new employer is generous with time off during the Christmas and New Year's season and we have been on holiday break since December 10.

could have if I wanted to, but it pays the same whether I work or not, so it would have been pointless.  Besides, I need the break ...  :spin:

I'm not working on Christmas this year.  I've worked plenty of them over the years, though.  I will have to work New Years Day though.  No big deal, I'm not the drinker or the party animal that I used to be.

Working Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (our holidays this year are the 25th and 26th and the 1st and 2nd, both Thursdays and Fridays, so we get four-day weekends) and will have to put in some time if it snows on any of my days off.

Nope. My company is shut down between Christmas and New Years and we all get paid holiday time. Add in a few vacation days and I'm out until the 5th.

Nope. Drove to Florida this weekend (arrived in Viera at 13:50 today). Taking the Auto Train home next weekend, slacking off all week, then going to the Winter Classic on New Year's Day and to the Kennedy Center on January 4.

NYSDOT gives off for both Christmas and New Years day.  I'm taking four days vacation for the rest of this week but will otherwise be working next week, including New Years Eve.

Nope as well. Now when I was working in 2012, I got Christmas off, and worked 21 hours from 10 a.m. New Year's Eve until 7 a.m. New Year's Day. These last few years, I've been off work and pursuing my education, so I've had all of the holidays off since July 2013.

My current job has the word "Christmas" in its name, so yeah. I'm working Christmas.

I have Christmas day and New Year's Day off. I work the Friday after both. I also work on the eve of both but do not expect either to be a busy day.

Of course since I work from home there is no "leaving early" to be had. I need to remember to stop working early. I forgot to stop working early the day before thanksgiving and accidentally impressed my boss when he saw emails still coming from me at at 4-5 PM that day :-D

Yes. Somebody has to man DC's firehouses. Well, about 400 of us have to.

I will work Christmas Day at Walmart this year.  I requested New Year's Eve and Day off.

I have the actual holidays off. But I'm scheduled to be the other weekdays.  We may get to leave early though Wed or Friday...or I just elect to show up a little late or leave a little early, regardless of what anyone says!

If it snows on Christmas (not likely) or New Years (too far away to know), then I could be working those days.

For the first time in forever, I have off this entire week and next. I don't work again until the 5th.

Beginning first of five work nights. At this point, I can use the overtime to pay for a trip next year.

Since I work overnights, I have to go in at 7 pm both Christmas and New Years.  Since I live close to my parents, I don't feel obligated to take the whole week off and prefer saving those days off for summer.  The ironic part about Christmas is that it is typically a really short day compared to the rest of December, but New Year's takes forever, which is life at a pharma distributor.

I will work Christmas Day at Walmart this year.  I requested New Year's Eve and Day off.

Was it open for customers today, or only for staff to get ready for post-Christmas crowds?

All the Walmarts in northern Virginia I drove past today, even the supercenters, were closed to the public.

I worked today to cover for the folks who wanted Christmas off. I got Thanksgiving off and went to see the family then, so I can't complain.

I will be working New Year's Eve but I have New Year's Day off. New Year's Eve is the casino equivalent of Black Friday, and I'm assigned to the busiest part of the casino, so I can't wait to see how that goes. (Maybe I can talk someone into switching with me.)

Worked every major holiday this year (7/4, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and will work on New Years) but at least I'll be paid extra for it, and have extra time off.

On my way to completing three of six work days this week. My manager gave me permission to work from home today.
