Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season! Just wondering if anyone got any road related gifts? My dad gave me a book titled The Next Exit. It lists food, fuel and lodging available at each interstate exit. States are listed alphabetically, there's then an exit list for each interstate and what's available at each exit. Nothing else road related for me this year, but it will provide great bedside reading. I can also see it being useful for food and fuel stops on road trips. I generally already have lodging reservations made when I travel.
I got my traditional Rand McNally atlas. Starting on the first, the 2012 version will go from my living room to my niece, the 2013 version will go from my father to my living room, the 2014 version will go from my car to my father, and the 2015 will go in my car.
I was hoping the mods would turn on the Alanland thread for one day.
It's embarrassing to admit this, but I really miss it.

I got a set of WeatherTech floor mats for my Prius. Since I once told the nav system in my sister's car to fuck off as it was trying to lead her astray, she knows better than to give me that kind of gift.
I got a larger external drive for my road porn.
I got money that I can use for road trips and a job interview on Monday so I can have money to take road trips.
Close enough, right?

Doesn't seem like a Christmas thing... more like something that would be done in April.

What size? I don't know what size the average external drive is these days. Mine is 1TB but I've had it for several years.

IMO, Alanland should be reopened. Even though I don't care for the nonsense that goes on there, I understand some people like the ability to express themselves with sophomoric jokes. Those who don't like it can always skip it.

It ran its course and turned into a constant rehash of goat->may and may not->obscure politicians named Alan->goat. Let's fire up the imaginations and try something new.

While it wasn't technically for Christmas, someone here did send me a nice collection of maps since I lacked any of my own (I'll let the person themselves say who they are if they want). :sombrero: Hopefully I can collect more in 2015!

Interestingly, yes. I have an aunt who works for her municipal government and she grabbed an old stop sign and an old yield sign from the highway department. Nothing terribly special, they're modern spec, but the number of actual road signs I own just went from zero to two.
AAA Road Atlas got Rand for BDay
For Christmas I got the 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas!! :D
I had asked for some old road atlases as well, but I got two eBay gift cards instead which I actually used just today. I found two Rand McNally road atlases, one from the 1970s and one from the 1940s!! :spin:
Last of all, my aunt & uncle gave me a Rand McNally book from the 1970s which listed points of interest back then for each state, but also had old road maps for each state.
I must have mentioned that I liked watching some highway video at one point, so Santa brought me a KDLinks dashboard camcorder. We'll see how it goes, and if I record anything interesting, I'll post it.

Since you're young, make sure you keep your maps in good condition and you'll have them when you're older. So even a brand new atlas would become something historical and interesting for the future.
My father bought a 1977 Thomas Guide (road atlas for Los Angeles County) just to use as a map, but for me, it has become an heirloom and an interesting way to look at how things have changed over the years.

My wife occasionally pays attention to me and noticed I love watching Russian dash cam videos, so she got me one! I think I got it set up correctly and may have recorded a drive over the new Mound St. Connector in Columbus, which I'll share tomorrow when I hook it up to my computer.
A really good friend of mine gave me the 1987 Maryland State Official Map for Christmas! (1987 was the year I was born :) )
