Title: Dutchess County map from 1963
Post by: dgolub on February 15, 2015, 12:03:03 PM
For anyone who's interested, I just uploaded an official map of Dutchess County, New York, from 1963 showing what the state and county route systems looked like back then.  It's available at http://www.greaternyroads.info/doclib.

The direct link to your map. I take it that I-84 hadn't been built in the county yet? I didn't see it at all.

I-84 was open from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in the county's extreme SW corner east to the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill town.  The map signs it with a U.S. Highway shield rather than an Interstate shield, and shows the road as "proposed" east of the Taconic.  I-84 clips the NE corner of Putnam County before entering CT.

This map brings back memories of my trip home from Nova Scotia in summer 1983 (via Bangor, west central ME, Mt. Washington Valley, Woodstock (VT), Bennington, Troy, I-787, then U.S. 9 from Rensselaer to I-84 (stopping at FDR's mansion in Hyde Park).  Then 84 west to the Poconos and home to SE PA where I lived at the time.  Thanks, dgolub.

Ahh, they even have the old Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad line. Too bad northeastern Dutchess County is cut off on that map.

I'd like to see how they kept trucks on I-84 from using the Taconic State Parkway at the time.

Thanks, D-Dey.

Yeah, the whole eastern border is cut off.  Thanks for pointing it out.
