Title: Two early alignments for I-95 in NJ
Post by: NE2 on February 16, 2015, 11:48:55 PM
I traced the two alignments from the map on http://www.nycroads.com/roads/I-95_NJ/ (about halfway down):

The east one was New Jersey's and the BPR's initial alignment. The west one came about after studies, and the BPR only accepted it south of I-287.

Between I-78 and NJ 21, New Jersey's proposal followed unbuilt NJ 75 (http://www.nycroads.com/roads/NJ-75/). Across the Passaic, it used what was planned as a relocated NJ 17 (http://www.nycroads.com/roads/NJ-17/). North of NJ 3 it's pretty close to the Turnpike.

Worth reading and has a map of the corridor shifts over time: http://raymondcmartinjr.com/njfreeways/Interstate_95_Gap.html

The eastern route should have been considered, even if it was truncated to meet up with the NJTP at Exit 8A.

Even just connecting east from US 1 to NJ 133 would be okay. But the I-276 interchange also works, at this point.

What's the deal with the alignment in PA paralleling the river rather than following what was built? Did they actually plan to use the segment of US 13 freeway as part of I-95?

I seem to have mistraced it south of the US 13 curve at Penn Valley Road - it would have followed a separate alignment through Levittown, crossing the Turnpike just west of US 13 and merging with current I-95 at PA 413.
