Broken traffic signal flips off pedestrians (http://www.freep.com/story/news/2015/03/26/broken-traffic-signal-flips-pedestrians/70511160/)
QuoteThe city of Fort Collins, Colo. on Thursday fixed a traffic signal on South College Avenue that gave pedestrians an obscene hand gesture instead of an order to stop.
It is unclear for how long the signal, at the corner of Johnson Drive near Creekside Park, had been malfunctioning, but traffic engineer Joe Olson said once the city is informed of such problems, they are usually fixed within one business day. For emergencies, such as flashing traffic lights, it is typically fixed within the hour.
Not the first time that happened https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tryilKB2kXk
You could also use duct tape to achieve that. I have seen this in the past.
There was one in Buffalo last week as well
They should just install the worded WALK / DONT WALK pedestrian signals. When did they stop installing the worded pedestrian signals anyway? In the 2000s? I know that New York City were still installing them in the '90s.

The MUCTD officially banned them in 2003. A lot of them were removed in the late 2000s/early 2010s when a lot of major cities upgraded their signals to LED.

New York City had worded pedestrian signals still installed until about 2002. They'd last for a short period of time and be retro-fitted with hand and man L.E.D. inserts.

The problem with that is that there is no numerical countdown to go along with a WALK / DONT WALK signal.
