I take it US 56 used to run through Ottawa Kansas.  Didn't get to eat here last night though :(

No, US 56 did NOT go through Ottawa. It has always followed the former US 50N through Overbrook and Council Grove.

Near as I can tell via Google search, there is another restaurant in Olathe, which is along Old 56.

I guess "Route 56" would know better than anyone!  It appears 56 could have been put through but never was.  Well, maybe I didn't miss anything then.

I saw that 3-4 years ago when I was in Ottawa for the weekend. Judging from the sign it's an old Country Kitchen.  I ate at one a few years ago and was NOT impressed.

Glad we skipped it then.

Gardner has Old 56 just off the Century Airport road and 56 itself. Then, a couple miles up in Olathe, we have Old 56 there.

When did 56 get rerouted in Olathe and Gardner or were there truck routes, etc? Just think that's odd to have Old 56 so close together and in parallel to each other.

That restaurant is actually located on old US 59... be interesting to hear why it's named 56.  Might not have anything to do with a highway number; might be a year...

US 56 was re-routed onto I-35 between Gardner and Olathe around 1985.

Actually, the reason it is called Old 56 is because it is this restaurant's second location. The first location is in Olathe on Old 56 and Chestnut.

I take it that 56 was a bit further west of 35 prior to 85?

Then it should have been the New 56

Old 56 takes a path generally north and west of I-35. The Old route starts just east of Moonlight Road in Gardner, turns northeast towards Clare Road near 167th, heads straight north to 151st, then turns east, then northeast toward Olathe.

Of possible note: the intersection with Parker Street/Lone Elm Road/K-7 on the west side of Olathe was for a long time a diamond interchange for Old 56. It was re-configured to a signalized intersection in the late 90s.

Ah ok. Yeah, I can easily see the old route on Google Maps. And you can still see the land of the former interchange at K-7 and Lone Elm Road.

US 50 did run along US 59 and was also concurrent with US 56 from US 59 into KC before I-35 if I am not mistaken?

I also see that US 59 now bypasses Ottawa as well as it is concurrent with I-35 for three exits.  I do not know how long that has been but if I remember correctly back in 01 it did not bypass the city.

You are correct. US 56 from US 59 east to Olathe was originally US 50.

The new US 59 freeway around Ottawa was opened in 2009. The Douglas County segment opened in 2012.
