Title: Older Interstate pictures
Post by: Buffaboy on June 14, 2015, 10:20:09 PM
Does anyone know where any mid-20th century Interstate pictures like this are?

Me too, I also like the "temp end" type of pictures before certain interstates were completed.  That's a snap shot of road history.

VTrans facebook page had some vintage photos of I-89 and I-91 posted, but I can't seem to find them now.  Good thing I saved them.  So I cannot take credit for these photos - I wasn't around back then.

UPDATE:  I found the source... the VTrans Flickr page.  There's even a video of the I-91 opening in the Windsor-WRJ area on page 2.

#5 - I-89 NB on approach to Exit 10 in Waterbury - temp end of roadway.  Interesting to note VT 100's original route was along VT 100B through Moretown to Middlesex, then jumping on I-89 apparently to Exit 10.  Before the interstate, today's VT 100 from the new Waterbury rotary, north to Stowe St was not built, neither was the route through North Duxbury just south of US 2/Waterbury.

I like that bottom picture "ALL TRAFFIC OFF" - like someone yelling "OK - EVERYBODY OUT!"  :-D

Dang, that button copy welcome sign takes me way back.  Great memories of crossing state lines with that kind of sign greeting you.

Has this been colorized? The photo has a certain Ted Turner look to it.

Courtesy of CL, I'll post this proof that I-415 was (briefly) signed in the 1960s:

I do not think I ever recall I-80 going to Denver nor any of its spurs at least from the west.

Not exactly taken centuries ago, but definitely old and through the weather for many decades.  I doubt Indiana has the color fading on interstate shields like the southern states have.

However, some old I-70 and I-465 state named shields near the former location of the Indianapolis International Airport.

It is a destination because I-80 was and still is the most direct route to Denver from SLC.

I-80 east was also US 40 east which was probably how people went to Denver back then...Google shows it as a little slower than other interstate-heavy routes that were not fully finished back then.
