Hopefully the title is clear. I'm honestly not sure if I qualify myself, but what made me think of this was the "most recent first time" thread, where the most recent interstate I've driven on for the first time is I-275 in Tampa. I don't have any memory of being on I-75 anywhere, but looking at a map, it's likely I have a mile or so crossing into Detroit from Windsor. (I may also have a portion in Cincinnati, although probably not; I think we took I-71 to US 50.)
Even opening it up to US routes, I'm not sure where I might have another candidate, but I thought it might make an interesting thread. Feel free to include close calls like mine (either where you have just a tiny bit of the parent like my example, or where you have a completely unrelated portion of the parent like my example).
I almost did it and actually did for a day. I drove I-196 in Michigan, but the next day I was actually on the parent when I drove I-69 around Lansing which concurs with it for a few miles.. However, I did not drive independent I-96 but for the sake of this I imagine it counts as being on after day one.
I was on US 666 but not US 66.
Well, I've been on I-270 in the Saint Louis area, without ever having been on I-70 anywhere near there. That's the best I got, though, since I vastly prefer 2dis to 3dis in my travel planning.
I can't really think of anything for myself. I will be travelling on I-376 in Pittsburgh later this summer but not I-76. That will count in the future.
I've been on I-278 in NY, but never on I-78 in NY :) I was on I-78 in PA once but i don't consider them related.
I'm not sure if the section of US 29 I was on in North Carolina is I-785 yet, but I've never been on I-85.
I've been on US 322, 422, and 522, but not US 22. I know for sure I've been on US 340, but I don't know if I've been on US 40 or not. Certainly not as a driver.
I've been on I-270 in Maryland but never on any part of I-70.
Historically:
-The Rochester I-x90 routes before I-90 (back when I was REALLY little)
-I-278 before I-78
-I-476 before I-76 (VERY briefly; only a couple hours, really)
Offhand, I've been on US 191 but never US 91. I've also been on US 400 but never US 0. :bigass:
I can definitively say I don't have any interstate examples - there are only three 2dis with children that I've never traveled a single inch of (I-29, I-45, and I-82), and I've never been on any of the children of either.
I-238!
Oh, okay. Um. US 195 and 395, but not US 95.
Nothing for the Interstates.
For US routes, I've definitely been on 522, and I've been on at least one (maybe two) out of 222, 322, and 422 somewhere in Pennsylvania. I have not, however, been on US 22.
Close calls: I've been on US 202 and 206, and I've been on less than two miles each of US 2 and 6 (the latter via concurrency with I-95 in Providence). I think 220/20 ends up in this category too.
US 202 and US 206 - I've never touched US 2 or 6. I-287 - I've never used I-87 either.
I've been on I-676 but not the eastern I-76. I think that's my only one.
Until 2015, US 206 but not US6. US 322 but not 22.
Unique case, until 2015 in the semi i also never went on i78 other than the NJ turnpike Extension.
Never been on US 2 (that I can remember), but I've used US 202 several times to cross the Hudson
Been on I-279 but not I-79
US 202 but not 2
US 206 but not 6
I-287 but not 87
I-278, but not I-78.
I-459, but not I-59
I-465, but not I-65.
Never been on the parents of US 340, 522, 220, 180, 206, 202, and possibly a few others.
I have been on U.S. 191, but not on U.S. 91; U.S. 163, but not U.S. 63; U.S. 220, but not U.S. 20; U.S. 278, but not U.S. 78.
Nothing I can think of for the Interstates.
I have been on US 231 but not 31. I was on the former 31 inside the Indianapolis beltway( Meridian St?)

We're too similar. :D
US 202 & 302 but not US 2
The only one I can think of is US 441, which I've traveled between the West Palm Beach area out to Lake Okeechobee in southern Florida, but never on US 41.
For me:
US 202
I-278
I-676

Oh yeah! LOL
Same here with US 202. I have been on US 6 and I-78, so I can't claim those.
US 220 and US 441. 220 seems trivial though since it doesn't even connect with 20.
U.S. 138, kinda. I haven't been on U.S. 6 where it replaced U.S. 38, but I have been on U.S. 6 in both Iowa and Ohio.
iPhone
No interstates for me, and only US 441 from I-40 to the Blue Ridge Pkwy in the US route category.
I can't think of any Interstates that fit this for me. If I have been on the 3di child, I have been on its parent 2di.
US route wise I would have to say US-131 for many years before I even saw a US-31 sign (as a kid, of course) but now even that doesn't apply anymore.
US 183 from Austin to Lampasas (and US 290 along I-35 in Austin) but not US 83 or US 90. (Also, US 281 and US 190 in Lampasas)
I-676 in Philadelphia, but not I-76
US 189 on its segment along I-80 between Utah and Wyoming, but not US 89 itself
I am on I-280 in Toledo every day, but have only been on I-80 just a handful of times in my life. Also, since US-27 was decommissioned in Michigan, I've been on US-127 many times, but not US-27 since.
Not as a driver (on a bus), but I-678 and I-495 in NY. Never been on I-78 or I-95. That might be my only examples. Can't think of any others. Unless you wanna throw in I-238 and US-101 :D
EDIT: US-191. I've been very close to US-91 but not actually on it. I guess I've also been on US-287, through Yellowstone, never on 87.
I checked, but my answer for this thread is basically "none". I've been on the parent for every 3-digit route I've been on.
I thought my answer was also none for US and I routes but I just checked and I have driven all of I-345 and none of I-45.
Mike
I've been on US 287 in the DFW area, but never on US 87.
Been on US 281 in San Antonio, but never on US 81.
I've been on US 169 in the Twin Cities, but never on US 69.
Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:
Interstates:
- I-390 in NY (this was only true for about an hour or two)
- I-180 in PA
US Routes:
- US 202
- US 192
- US 222 / 322 / 422 (true until last spring)
- US 220

Me too, except I've been on 6 (as a passenger) and only recently on 87 for the first time as a driver (Used 287 many times before that).
No interstates, 238 notwithstanding (does it count if CA 238's the parent?).
US 169
US 666 (does CA 66 invalidate this?)
US 491 (does CA 91 invalidate this?)
US 199 (does CA/OR/WA 99 invalidate this?)
US 101 :bigass:
I can only count US 395

I think the spirit of the question is that driving the state route remnant of a parent US route counts as driving on the parent route.

Definitely no interstates for me. For US routes, I can only think of 441 in TN and FL, 302 in NH and ME, and 202 in NJ.

One could have said that I've been on US-163 and not it's "Parent", but then they look at where I'm at.... quite close to US-63 - and been on it.
For a time I had I-278 and I-478 (Battery tunnel for those who missed it) w/o I-78 myself. The former in 2010, that changed last year. Outside of that I have none that I can think of anywhere in the US - I or US.
I've thought about this topic for years because growing up in Williamsport, US 220 was a part of daily life, but US 20 was entirely foreign to me. It wasn't until a trip to Idaho last year when I first actually drove on it. (Edit: I may have stumbled onto a few blocks of US 20 in Boston a few years earlier, but still...)
I'm pretty confident that I've never been on US 2, although I made heavy use of US 202, particularly while at WCU. I have to think that US 202 is on many people's lists.
US 209 was for many years–I don't think so anymore.
As to Interstates, I think the only 2DIs I haven't been on are some of the shorter routes far from cities I'm likely to visit (I-19, I-27), most of which don't have 3DIs.
Offhand, I've been on US-385 and US-287 but never on 85 or 87.

Yeah, for three simple reasons:
1. Concurrency with I-95 in Wilmington
2. Concurrency with US 6 on the Bear Mountain Bridge and its eastern approach
3. Concurrency with I-84, US 6, and US 7 in Danbury
If you've done any amount of traveling in the northeast, you've probably encountered or used US 202 several times, while US 2 is in the middle of nowhere up by the Canadian border. One of the few cases where a child is more prominent than its parent.
I have driven US 202 plenty of times living in New Jersey. In fact I worked my very first job ever at A T & T in Bedminster back in 1984 which is along the US 202 & 206 concurrency. I have only been on US 2 as a child, but never actually drove it.
Looks like I've been on the 2di/2dus parent for every 3di/3dus I've traveled. With the restriction that the parent must exist (US 138, I-238).
I could almost count a couple interstates here. I-640 could be included but my travels on I-75 had I-40 concurrent with I-75. I-285 could have been included but I traveled with I-75 and I-85 on the downtown connector. Damn concurencies.
I won't count US routes because of how infinitely easier it is to drive a 3DUS without driving on its parent because of how far apart they can end up. But as far as I can remember I have no examples of this with interstates either. :(
Because it has been mentioned, should we even consider US 220 for the purposes of this thread? While it's a spur, per se, it never had a connection to US 20 either directly or via another spur (although one was planned in the form of US 120). They're effectively unrelated routes.

Only if you consider "more prominent" to equal "more mileage" or "closer to population"...
US 421
US 202, 206, 222, 522, 158, and 192.
I-278.
Now that a post mentioned US 421 I realized I have travelled that but not US 21.

Or even grown up here. I don't remember the first time I was on any of US 202 but I must have been reasonably young. Would have been in Danbury, one of your examples. But I was in college the first time I ever was on any of US 2.
I drove US 412 in New Mexico as well, but I've never drove on US 12.
For me, US 421 in northern Indiana. I've never been anywhere near US 21. Also, I took a small chunk of I-279 to get to a Pirates game one day, but never found my way to I-79.
Yeah, I was on US 202 long before I was on US 2. US 202 was practically in my backyard growing up, whereas US 2 is way up north.
I'd imagine this is the case for quite a few people given how drastically US 202 strays from US 2.
No Interstates.
US 191, in AZ and WY.
US 421, but never US 21.

Same for me. That's the only one I can think of. It's almost like cheating because the part of the child I've been on is so far from the parent.
No interstates for me.
I've been on US 421, 321, and 221 but not 21.
I've also been on US 150, and the only sections of 50 I've been on are the atrociously signed segment in DC. Therefore, I could say that it qualifies if I didn't know any better.
I'm pretty sure I have the I-270 example from St. Louis as well. Never hopped on I-70.
US 183 (only from a short concurrency with US 287 near Vernon, TX), never been on US 83
Been on I-278 NY, but never I-78 and I-480 OH and I-580 NV, but never I-80

Yep, Carroll County and White County, Indiana, and downtown Michigan City.
1. US 211 on the day my friend and I went from the DC area to Shenandoah National Park, but not US 11.
2. US 421 on my trip to Indy, but not US 21, although I did travel on OH 21 in the Cleveland area.
3. Also in Cleveland, US 322 and US 422, but never US 22.
4. Back when I was a kid, I was on US 191 in Bozeman, MT, then in 2009, I was on its overlap with I-10, but never on US 91.
5. That 2009 trip also had me on US 180, but not on a current section of US 80, although I was on AZ 80 to see Tombstone, plus I assume at some point when I was in El Paso, I had to be on an old alignment of US 80.
I was on parts of U.S. 19 (where it was multiplexed with I-275) near St. Petersburg, Fla. and Tampa, but not otherwise.
But I have driven long sections of U.S.119 and U.S. 219. in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky.
US180 (Grand Canyon), but not US80.
Nothing on Interstates now, but for a couple of weeks, I had I-405, but not I-5, and for a short period of time (the length of time to traverse from I-5 to I-80) I had I-580, but not I-80.
Anyone who has traveled I-238 clearly can count that!
For me:
US 220 but not US 20
US 301 but not US 1
I've been on US-522 (see the lame clinches thread) but I don't believe I've ever been on US-22. I may have also been on US-322, but don't remember.
None for me either. But some of the closest "connections" are pretty far away:
* US 202 in Connecticut, but US 2 in Montana
* US 395 in the Eastern Sierras; US 95 in Idaho
* US 441 in Florida; US 41 in Nashville
* US 169 in Minnesota; US 69 in Oklahoma

What route did you take to get to and from Pikeville a couple of years ago?
throw my hat in the US 202 / US 206 pile.
