Title: Half and Half intersections
Post by: silverback1065 on June 17, 2015, 02:00:31 PM
On my way to Bloomington, IN, I noticed an interesting intersection: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.513822,-86.401424,3a,75y,8.31h,81.19t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sYbwPaqRV7WB1zF4ap38uFw!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DYbwPaqRV7WB1zF4ap38uFw%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D100%26h%3D80%26yaw%3D141.90488%26pitch%3D0!7i13312!8i6656

it's a signal on one side of the street, but a flasher on the other!  Have any of you guys run into this?  It can be any 2 types of traffic control.  I wonder how safe these intersections are.

That's two separate intersections, so I don't see the problem.

There is one of these in Jasper, TN at US 41/64/72 and SR 28. At this one, the northbound exit ramp get a signal at the US Hwy intersection, but the SB exit ramp does not.

In Grandview Heights, Ohio, the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Third Avenue has a traffic light. Also involved are Hope Avenue and Meadow Road, whose approaches are controlled with stop signs. Maybe they are technically separate intersections on paper, but if you take a look, there's no way they function as separate intersections. I personally think the city should make those minor streets one-way for a block leading away from the intersection.

Not sure if this counts.  Waukesha WI: Us 118 and one side of the side road has traffic lights and the side of the side road has a stop sign: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Waukesha,+WI/@43.028113,-88.185292,3a,75y,351.61h,90.23t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sPQmSE3LBFLsPu-iUx8CmWA!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo0.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DPQmSE3LBFLsPu-iUx8CmWA%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D100%26h%3D80%26yaw%3D326.65454%26pitch%3D0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x8805a626948e9757:0xab2da13461989c95!6m1!1e1

That is because this is a right out only.  Being that this is not NYC, right turns on red are allowed.  If it had a signal people would be treating this as a stop street anyhow.

I now see what he is talking about.  Yes its two different intersections, but on the same highway.  We have that along FL 527 in Pine Castle, FL where SB FL 527 at Fairlane Avenue is without signal, but NB FL 527 (one block over on Hansel Avenue) is signalized.

Perhaps he should have worded his OP differently.  However, this is a rare find, I would say, being that most are in urban areas usually on two one way couplets or a road with a wide median.  Obviously the signal side of the road must of seen its fair share of accidents and the other side did not.
