Title: Satellite Imagery
Post by: tribar on June 24, 2015, 11:06:57 PM
I apologize if this is in the wrong area but is there any FREE and LEGAL place that has more recently update images than Google Earth/Maps.  While Google does do a good job at keeping the images up to date, I was curious if there was a better site out there.

Thanks.

The USDA's Data Gateway (https://gdg.sc.egov.usda.gov) occasionally has imagery that's more recent than Google Earth/Maps.  However, it requires having a program that can view MrSID files (several free programs are around if you search), and the resolution is lower than Google Earth:  generally 1 meter/3.28 feet per pixel.

Or you could see the same imagery in USGS topos, at a small scale. Because of their work plan, it'll nominally be within three years old.

Often times County Property Appraiser GIS viewers have an aerial overlay that can be viewed with more recent satellite imagery.
