Title: Dallas: City trying out new larger/more reflective stop signs

The article brings it up but shows no size comparisons, reflection comparisons, or anything else to help the average joe-driver know what to look for; the pic above is the only illustrative item with the article.

(As an aside, this pic does show nicely the city's transition on its street sign blades from the longtime font on the 'Peabody' (the one being removed), to the skinnier one used in recent years in the 'J.B. Jackson, Jr.' street blade found also on the pole being removed.  The new pole on the corner shows off Dallas' version of Clearview, which has seen wide acceptance and use by the city.)

Anyway, any other places trying out bigger/more reflective stop signs?

From the picture, it doesn't appear to be any real difference.

They should really stop squeezing the letters into the sign so the letters practically bleed into the border...

Agreed. I can't see any difference besides the red not being faded.

I can see a major difference in the stop signs' reflectivity. The old red has faded and you can see rust from the top bolt running down the sign.

Also, did anyone else notice the block numbers on the new signs are 100 less for J.B. Jackson, Jr. Blvd and 100 more for Peabody Ave.?  :pan:

Maybe the article is saying they are finally getting away from using 24x24 stop signs. Dallas has a long history of using 24x24 stop signs on wide major streets, where larger signs should have been used. Also, they are now using HIP instead of EG.

24x24 stop signs have been disallowed by the MUTCD for a while now.

Flower Mound was really bad about this in the old days. They have since replaced them with DG or HIP signs of the proper size.

Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't know this, but what are DG, EG, and HIP?

EG-Engineer Grade
HIP-High Intensity Prismatic (3m version has lines) plenty bright enough
DG- Diamond grade-way more expensive than HIP, but just a little brighter.
