For me, it's either Hardee's or Sonic, not-as-much for the food (it's pretty :meh: to be honest), but that there are none within convinient distance for me-at least for Sonic. My nearest Hardee's is a good 150 miles or more for me.

Waffle House!
(Where it's available anyway. Like Hardee's or Sonic, it's not all that good, but I still feel like I'm missing something if I don't go at least once.)
Depending on the region I'm in, I usually have places I go to eat. I'd say my top three that I'll go out of my way for are:
1. Steak 'n Shake when either in the midwest or when I travel to eastern Montana for work. I never hesitate to stop at the one in Billings despite it being a ways off the freeway.
2. Runza in Nebraska
3. Blake's in NM
Taco Johns (for the potato Oles)
Culvers (chicken cashew salad)
Mike
For me it would have to be Burger King and McDonalds.
I'm going to regret it so much in the future when I have diabetes, won't I? Even though I don't eat it alot junk food always wins.
Any local hot dog joint.
Yep, Waffle House.
in-N-Out, which I eat at once (and only once) just for the fries, every time I visit California.
Culver's (guilt comes from having a custard...Butter Burgers don't feel as guilty for some reason)
Arby's mozzarella sticks. I make a meal of them. Especially if I'm in the Cincinnati area; those locations have a 9-piece for under $6.
Culvers - nuff said.
In'N'Out became this while I was in California - though I was missing Culvers - and surprised to see them in Phoenix when I drove there.
Culvers.
Sheetz.
Considering most of my travels take me not that far away from home, most of the restaurants are about the same. But I would have to say In N Out took this spot when I was out in California. We stopped there several times for food.
Jack in the Box if I'm traveling past the Charlotte, NC area. :)
Sheetz or Cook Out.
I have not been there since 1998, but the first place that immediately came to mind was the Varsity in Georgia, especially their onion rings. Give me two orders of those, strap a pipe to my arse, and my car just might go faster than Concorde.
I keep hearing about In n Out but I've never been anywhere they operate. That'll change this fall when we visit my brother-in-law in Phoenix, so I'll have to try to check them out.
I will say Sheetz probably more for the 3 cents off per gallon with a Sheetz card than the food itself.
Jack-in-the-Box used to be on my list. I used to love their fries back when I ate there in California in the late 1990s. However, last time I was there a few years ago, the fries just didn't taste like I remembered -- they were more like wannabe McDonald's fries.
Oh well.
Braums now if I am ever in Southern Kansas, SW Missouri, NW Arkansas, or anywhere in Oklahoma.
For breakfast, it's usually Waffle House. For lunch or dinner, it's usually Perkins.
Waffle House. Anytime.

Once I've backed out of my driveway, I'm "on the road". There's a Checkers I like to hit if I'm making a dump (excuse me-Waste Transfer Center) run. Not enough Quizno's near me, and because of this thread, I just discovered there's one a block from my favorite lumber yard, which I wish I'd known last Friday...
Del Taco - none in PA, but one in Toledo on the way to Indiana.
Culver's - any place in the Upper Great Lakes region when back there.
White Castle. I don't know what's wrong with me.
I'm very thankful that Culver's and Steak 'n Shake are already plentiful where I live.

Last I looked into it, Steak 'n' Shake had only one Michigan location. Have they expanded there?
Oh I forgot Jack N The Box and Whataburger which are on every street corner in Texas. We used to have them years ago (Jack In The Box) in NJ, but they closed them all down in the late 70's. Then Wataburger used to have three in Orlando that made out well, but for some unknown reason, less than a full year they opened them up, they closed them down. I only got to eat there once during their brief tenor, so now its when I am in Texas or Arkansas for Wataburger, but if anyplace west of the Mississippi then its Jack N The Box.
Dairy Queen in Opelousas, LA - chili cheese dog, BBQ Lays, and Mr Pibb for $2.95 after tax. Also any DQ Brazier or Texas DQ, not those crappy Grill and Chill places, and also any McDonalds that serves Fruitopia.
However, I always love Eskamoes Frozen Custard in north Louisiana, and any restaurant I've never eaten at will be visited. I always get a large cup, since I collect large plastic fast food cups from different restaurants.
I guess for me guilty pleasure implies something different. There are a couple of places that some of my close friends probably would not approve of me eating at...but I like good food, so...It does kind of enter my mind when I eat at those places if some freak thing happens and they find out and I get in trouble. :pan:
Otherwise I just have no shame, and what's delicious is delicious with no guilt. :sombrero:
Cracker Barrel sometimes wins out if my wife and I are in the mood for some healthy-food-be-damned cooking. Personally, it's worth the wait if it's not too bad.
For the record, i am a type II diabetic. It is all about moderation.
It used to be Denny's (doesn't exist in Quebec) and Dunkin' Donuts (barely exists in Canada due to Tim Horton's competition; seriously, I think there's only 4), now I got tired of both and don't really have one. Except for Bagger Dave's in Michigan and maybe Olive Garden elsewhere.

No, they have lots of locations in Michigan, at least according to their website. I certainly hope the service is not as poor at the others as it is at the one nearest my house. Last time I was there, it took over an hour to get a milkshake, and that was at one o'clock in the morning.

I think that's your problem right there. In my experience, fast food service is the absolute worst at odd hours like overnight and between shifts. I've typically gotten better service and better products when the stores are busy.

As SnS is typically one of very few places one can dine in after midnight, it can actually be busiest around that time, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
Around here, SnS has very high employee turnover, and expectations for service are not high, but in my experience the service is adequate more often than not.

Turnover is pretty high at all restaurants. It's a rare day when I see a server that I've seen before in the same restaurant.
My guilty pleasure road food go-to is probably Wendy's. Wendy's makes a very good fast food cheeseburger. I recognize that they are everywhere, so this is kind of a boring choice, but that's probably my most frequent guilty pleasure restaurant.
Whatever has 4 stars or above on Yelp. Fast food makes me sick.
How has no one mentioned Golden Corral? They serve sin in food form. What the hell do they put in those butter rolls? People always say that buffets are rip offs, but I'm happy paying for the *idea* of endless food. It's worth it to me.
I would also probably say chik fil a. The whole civil rights deal puts me off a bit, I'm not totally sure if I'm ok with giving to a company with those ideals. But their chicken is too delicious, and I'm too morally weak, so every time I'm down south I have to stop.

Agree with you about Chick-Fil-A, though. Very yummy, but I'd hate to be grouped in with other customers that are overtly homophobic (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/chick-fil-a-anti-gay-controversy-employees-speak-out_n_1729968.html).

We call it the Golden Trough. Yuck.
My "guilty pleasure" restaurants when traveling are chain steakhouses like Texas Roadhouse or Outback. We never go to them at home because there are better local places to get steak, or I'll just cook one at home. When traveling though, I can always count on getting an inexpensive steak and cold beer sitting at the bar, and I can usually find one within a half mile of my hotel anywhere in the US. Oh, and blooming onions are awesome.
See also: PF Changs and Cantina Laredo, if I'm someplace that has them.

They may have not been mentioned because a roadtrip 'guilty pleasure' depends on where people live. For me, Chick-fil-A (a name that no one ever spells right) is 10 minutes away, so it's a normal option for dinner. We had a Golden Correl about the same distance away as well, but it has since closed down.
For me, Bojangles would be one, or Steak-n-Shake. Sonic was one as well, until they opened some in NJ.
Golden Corral is very much one of my friends' guilty pleasures when we're in the U.S. As a result, I've followed him into that place more than I should have.

For some inexplicable reason, the Golden Corral in Colonie, NY is immensely popular, even taking into account the Adirondack tour buses that stop there.
Then again, the local Olive Garden is also overrun, despite there being decent Italian restaurants in the area.
A friend of mine thinks that people that live in the Capital Region don't have taste buds.
I don't consider Culver's a guilty pleasure; I consider it the best fast-ish food option available.
Golden Corral; that one is definitely a guilty pleasure. "All you can eat." Challenge accepted! I damn sure get my money's worth. The key is to not touch any bread, potatoes or rice if you can. Then I spend two hours feeling like absolute shit and regret my abysmal choice to go to Golden Corral in the first place.
One last guilty pleasure that I am weening myself off of. The heat lamp grill at Kwik Trip, Casey's General Store, Maverick, Allsup's, etc...(depending on where I am) Too many times I did not just walk past that reheated garbage, sad to say. I always feel guilty about those purchases.

I took this thread's intent to mean, "places you eat when you're traveling and those places aren't native to your home location." Which is why I replied with Sheetz as my answer.
There are two Golden Corrals within an hour of me, so I can't really consider it a guilty pleasure. Many may not remember when GC was a steakhouse that had an expanded salad bar/hot food bar. Sometime in the 90s, they made the decision to become a full buffet restaurant.
My other "guilty" pleasure is either Gold Star or Skyline Chili, as I mentioned in the other very similar thread. Not too terribly guilty, since at least chili isn't fried, but any meal on a bowl of spaghetti adds a bonus multiplier of calories (no, I cannot order it without the spaghetti, you soulless heathen).
Honestly, the most overeating I usually dive into is at mom-n-pop places where they toss in a fool's paradise of sides and things to an otherwise large meal, and it's all delicious, and they're too nice to waste their delicious food, and my girlfriend rudely didn't finish all hers so I might as well go ahead and...

I actually forgot about that. Now I remember.
Bojangles: ate at the one in Albertville, AL. IT SUCKED!!! I will not go back to any Bojangles.
Golden Coral has its moments. I can eat there, but not a guilty pleasure.
Spaghetti with chili? Never thought of that. If I am ever near Skyline or Gold Star I will try it.
A place called USA Steak Buffet (particularly, the location in Cambridge, OH) was the annual stop for our trips down to Louisville for our 7-year run ('03-'09) of Lebowskifest trips.
It advertised all-you-can-eat steak, and it was simultaneously as great and awful as we'd hoped.
In the last couple years, I had thought about trying to convince people to try some Skyline chili on the way back, but no one else felt like it (possibly cause they didn't think chili would go too well with their hangover), so I have yet to try it.
A&W root beer floats, but only in Canada, not in the states.

I thought it sounded like a bad idea, but I tried it 10+ years ago on a recommendation from a Cincinnati native when I said I was going to be traveling through that area. We used to have Caribou Coffee shops in the DC area, but they've all been changed to Peet's. One thing I prefer about pretty much any coffee shop other than Starbucks is that you can just order "small," "medium," "large," etc., without them trying to "correct" you to use some silly jargon. I don't go to Starbucks that often, I don't know what their terminology is, and I don't really care–it seems to me if I ask for "whatever the largest size black iced coffee is," it's pretty clear what I want.

I used to work across the street from the Metro Center exit at 13th and G and there was indeed a Caribou there next to the Metro entrance. It's been several years since I worked there and I have not gone past there recently to confirm whether it was converted, but the local news said all DC-area Caribou stores were to become Peet's. Gold Star recently started putting calorie counts on their menu boards and I have to say I was a bit shocked by the numbers. But you get that spaghetti involved and a bunch of bread and oyster crackers you'll build the calories for sure.

Steak N' Shake service can be hit or miss, but so can other places.
As for me, I don't think it's possible to go wrong with McDonald's. I have made a point, however, to modify what I eat when I go there.

Spaghetti with chili? Never thought of that. If I am ever near Skyline or Gold Star I will try it.
I thought it sounded like a bad idea, but I tried it 10+ years ago on a recommendation from a Cincinnati native when I said I was going to be traveling through that area. I've been back many times since (Skyline has a location in Naples, FL, I try to hit once per visit down there), and make my own at home using the chili seasoning packets they sell at Skyline.
And two other places that are a guilty pleasure locally (no, I wasn't the guy Pete spoke to). But Gold Star and Skyline are excellence.

I don't go to Starbucks that often, I don't know what their terminology is, and I don't really care–it seems to me if I ask for "whatever the largest size black iced coffee is," it's pretty clear what I want.
One day I just decided this wasn't going to be a problem anymore, and just stopped thinking about saying anything but "small," "medium," or "large" (or "whatever the largest size black iced coffee is") and it really hasn't been a problem. If they say "venti?" or whatever to me, I just repeat "medium." I'm not going to commit new cute terms for common sizes to memory any more than I'm going to do so for "cup" or "straw."
A local shop here has yet more terms like "midi" and "sumo." I also use English there. In all cases it all works out easily.
