San Vicente, Venice, and La Brea are some of the streets mentioned here.

I just have to add that Nathan Masters has a great series of articles on LA history here on the KCET site as well as on http://southland.gizmodo.com.  Much of his stuff would be very interesting to the readers here.  I try to follow his columns regularly.

I especially like the article(s) about the hill and tunnel removals near the location pf the current Santa Ana downtown.
