Title: 10 day countdown...Chicagoland's 1st DDI - IL-59 at I-88
Post by: Stratuscaster on September 12, 2015, 09:58:50 PM
IDOT anticipates that the DDI at IL-59 and I-88 in Naperville/Warrenville will be open in 10 days.

They started the ramp closure from I-88 to IL-59 last night - routing you to either the Eola Road or Winfield Road exits and then north to IL-56/Butterfield to get to IL-59.

IL-59 northbound can only directly access I-88 EB; IL-59 southbound can only directly access I-88 WB.

I may have mentioned this before - I'm not a fan of the signing in the leftmost lanes on IL-59 through the DDI.

I hope Illinois drivers are ready to drive London style over I-88

A 21st-century innovation is finally coming to Chicagoland! Way to go, IDOT!

Chicago Tribune has a short story on it.

My friend Jason Salley (geometrics engineer at IDOT District 1) worked with the Tollway in getting this design approved.

True, but IDOT has only added lanes recently in Effingham and Marion. I can't think of anywhere else IDOT has expanded highways lately.

No, the IL-59 DDI was an IDOT project, the tollway did not pay for it. The Tollway is only paying for the Elmhurst Road interchange.

Forgot that, Marion is SPIU, Barrington and I-90 is going to be a SPUI exchange too.

So two DDI?

I-88/IL-59 and Elmhurst Rd/I-90?

Went through on Route 59 southbound late Thursday. Intuitive geometry. Not necessarily attractive, but functional signage. Nothing about it makes you want to turn right from the thru lanes into the oncomming traffic.  Not my first DDI experience though.  The first one I went through was near the Arundel Mills mall in Maryland, which is a halfish DDI.
