Title: Other additions to my collection
Post by: M3019C LPS20 on October 11, 2015, 02:17:35 AM
Aside from the two vintage highway signs I recently acquired, I also obtained two vintage New York City street signs.

The first one is a 1920s porcelain "humpback" sign. Stamped as "CROTONA PK. N." From the Bronx.

The second one is marked as "BAY AV," and it is a double-sided porcelain street sign from Brooklyn. From the Midwood neighborhood of the borough.

I have another one of this kind that's labeled as "BEVERLEY RD," and it came from Flatbush.

I should clarify that I did not necessarily purchase these signs directly from New York City. Instead, I bought them from EBay.

What is interesting about this sign, is that signs of this era basically had the street you were crossing in the main part of the sign and the street you were on in the humpback.  E.g. if you were at the corner of 5th Ave and 42nd Street, and you were on 5th Avenue in a car, the sign you will see will have 42nd Street in the main part of the sign with 5th Avenue in the humbpack.

Here, both the humpback and the main part of the sign say the same thing.  Very interesting.

The reason the name appears twice on the sign is that Crotona Pk. N. does not run entirely straight (it forms a "L" at one segment).
