Title: TX: Accident at Limited Sight Distance Overpass on I-35E
Post by: Brian556 on October 15, 2015, 01:15:14 AM
I made a topic a few years back discussing how sight distance is often inadequate on freeways where they go over streets.

Well, the other day, a huge accident occurred on I-35E at Corinth Pkwy at one of these locations.

When I drove it, I did not notice the sight distance being particularly bad, and bad driving was probably the primary cause of this accident.
I would also suspect that all drivers involved were exceeding the 55 MPH speed limit.

It involved 2 18 wheelers and several cars.

The fact that it occurred just beyond the crest of the hill suggests to me that sight distance was a contributing factor.

At this location, Corinth Pkwy used to go over I-35E, and it was recently switched so that I-35E now goes over Corinth Pkwy.
Also, both directions are temporarily using the southbound bridge while the northbound bridge is being built.
I'm wondering if the sight distance is worse for northbound traffic since the are traveling in the opposite direction that the lanes are designed to be used for.
