Title: "Overpowered" interchanges
Post by: Buffaboy on October 16, 2015, 03:59:16 PM
So we all know of the interchanges that seem too big for their purposes. Some were intended to be highways or spurs of highways like the NY 954H and I-86 interchange (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.1562868,-79.378763,15.25z) in Bemus Point, NY, or the US 9/I-90 interchange (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.6700202,-73.7494252,16z) in Albany. The former, according to empirestate, may have been for a spur of I-86 to near Westfield, or its original intended alignment, while the latter was obviously for the mid Crosstown Arterial.

Any others?

There's already a thread for this (with a strangely similar name :D):

We already had this thread. Including the same title, where "overpowered" was originally meant as "overbuilt" but interpreted by some as "overburdened" with much more traffic than it was designed for.

The eastern half of the I-695 and I-70 interchange.  I-70 was supposed to travel east into Baltimore but the project was cancelled.  Last year, AASHTO approved decommissioning I-70 east of the interchange and downgrading the freeway to accommodate a light rail line.  It will be interesting to see if the interchange will be reconfigured.

US 3 and the spur to NH 3A.  Was supposed to be the Circumferential Highway around Nashua, NH, but is just a short spur.

I-35W and Washington Ave in Minneapolis.  Has been downgraded somewhat but is still a big interchange

I-310 and US 61 near New Orleans

Why is CT 3A in New Hampshire?

Most of the time when I create threads like this I take a guess as to whether it was created, because I can't be bothered to search. I guess I was wrong this time, and ironically I used a similar name!

Definitely search beforehand, but shit happens. Don't worry about it.

It is pretty damn funny that you used the same name though.

I do find it ironic. I know empirestate called it "high-powered," but I guess "overpowered" is more natural or something  :-D

A good reason to start searching...
