He wouldn't have flew into the sign if he wore his seatbelt. I don't understand why so many in my generation do some of the dumbest shit when it comes to driving.

I'm not usually so quick to laugh at someone's demise, but this is pretty damn funny.

Trying now to think of more ironic street names that he could have "hit". Seat Belt Drive? Barrel Roll Lane?

Sounds like a way most of you guys would want to go out.  :bigass: Ok, me too...  :sombrero: I'd prefer being struck by lightning, though.

I first read this on la times web site.  The first thing that came to mind was that someone here would create thread titled "BGS kills driver"

Well, that certainly one ups the dude who committed suicide by hanging himself from an overhead sign (http://nypost.com/2015/09/02/body-found-hanging-near-highway-exit-in-queens-during-rush-hour/) a couple months ago.

Let's see - indestructible 20 YO in a fancy car?

Yep.

BTW, Why didn't CalTrans use an MUTCD-complient exit number tab on that BGS assembly (or should I bother asking, seeing as it is CalTrans)?

:hmmm:

The car in question was a Prius.  To me, fancy means either luxurious, sporty and/or exotic.  The Prius (no offense Oscar) is not a fancy car.

Check out the car, though. The windshield isn't broken, so he had to be going hard enough to get tossed around the car, out one of the other windows, and up to the sign. That's some talent there.

Aren't they supposedly worried about "wind load" with exit tabs? Imagine the trouble they'd have with body load! :)

...and now I just spent the last 20 minutes attempting to estimate what wind speed would put an equivalent load on that sign to a human body impacting it. What are you doing with your evening?

Exit tab would have been busted off if it were in that proper place.

If it makes you feel any better, generation after generation has been performing dumb acts with self-propelled vehicles since day one.

"Wind load" is the official Caltrans excuse explaination for not installing proper exit tabs on their signs.  I've heard from reliable sources that, due to California laws, they would have to first do an environmental assessment of the shadow effect caused by adding separate exit tabs to BGSes.

As for the structural loading issues, most of the BGS supports were installed between the 1950s and the 1970s.  Ignoring the fact that these supports probably should be replaced anyway simply due to their age, it's my understanding that fabricators during that time period used enough of an 'overbuild' safety factor in their designs that the minimal additional loading from a separate exit tab would not be a factor.

Now, if this had happened on the Cross Westchester when they used to have the signs reading "White Plains  No White Plains", ...

Maybe they needed to sacrifice two lambs. And did anyone notice the irony that the young man was on his way to work at Glendale Collision Center?
