Title: Business Routes abbreviated as "BUS" on signs
Post by: Pink Jazz on January 16, 2016, 11:55:30 PM
I was wondering, does anyone know where can you find signs that use the abbreviation "BUS" for business routes?  I heard they were once more common in the past, but are now rare; as far as I know it is no longer allowed by the MUTCD (which requires the word "BUSINESS" to be spelled out fully) due to potential confusion with bus routes.  Business routes are not routes for buses!

This is AFAIK still quite common in Georgia.

Growing up, I remember seeing a handful of references to "BUS 90" below I-10 in New Orleans. While I think it's more common for LDOTD to refer to the Westbank Expressway as "BUSINESS 90", I found a cople of references to "BUS 90 "(Which was kinda confusing to a kid who frequently rode buses to New Orleans for school field trips):

LaDOTD still uses BUS. In 2015, there was an overhead sign replacement project in Monroe & West Monroe. The street view below is of the new signs after the project.

Which is probably my favorite way to sign it. Short, sweet, and doesn't get confused with "Bus".

Mmmm, a Whataburger and a Waffle House next door to each other!  I keep forgetting that FL has Whataburger locations.

Oh, the topic.... while checking the surroundings, I saw BUS also on the BGS seen before Brian's street view post pic.

Bus 41 in Bradenton.

A recent (2013/2014) install on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (https://www.google.com/maps/@27.9549184,-82.4379087,3a,50.4y,129.65h,94.07t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s0P33NANQzfbGTN79crSKGQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)
Bus 41 in Venice (https://www.google.com/maps/@27.1100223,-82.4452994,3a,75y,155.86h,88.05t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sllH9WH7bFTfI-ggOJqG9jA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)

I think it's safe to say that it is not uncommon on BGS's at least around here.
The sign assemblies on the surface streets mentioned above don't use abbreviated auxiliary signage.

In St. Augustine, FL, the US 1 Business is signed with little tiny BUS letters inside the shields making it look like its parent when viewing from a distance.

Since FDOT gave up the colored shields back in 1993, there is not set standard for Business routes in Florida.  Many have banners on top with the whole word spelled out, and some have the whole word spelled inside the shield while the rest are like US 1 Business in the Nation's Oldest City.

Along US 53 and Wis 29 in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls, BUS is used on the BGS on the freeways at exits and mileage signs.
