Title: What widely known landmark to you live or work near?
Post by: jeffandnicole on January 19, 2016, 02:10:38 PM
Generally, people can describe where they live or work based on something in their same region.  For some people, maybe it's a National Park, tall building, or a major mall (Mall of America, for example).  Think of things that are generally a destination or point of interest to a lot of people.  "Local County Park" or "Small Shopping Plaza" may be significant for some people in a small area, but most people aren't going to know where it is.

And for fun, leave roads out of it.  Thus, no Spaghetti Interchanges or 5 Stacks! :-)

For me...a block down from NJ's Capitol Building.  And while I live close to Philly, I'll often describe it as just 3 miles away from the ballparks and PHL Airport, which means, technically, I can't fly a drone.  Unfortunately, some of those planes do fly quite low right over my house!!!

Probably the best-known landmark that I live near would be West Point.

As for work, it's typically Times Square or just generally "Broadway". Though some days I'm down close to the Flatiron Building instead, or sometimes Radio City Music Hall (not just "near", but "at"), and if I'm at the studio, I might be closer to Madison Square Garden. And of course my commute passes through the widely-known Grand Central Terminal.

I hope nobody here lives near the Westboro Baptist Church.

The beautifully photogenic, stately Old Capitol Building of Georgia is less than 50 yards from my campus office on the grounds of Georgia Military College, Milledgeville.  Completed in 1838.  Secession approved in the Old Legislative Chamber, 1861.  Occupied by the Union Army, 1864 despite being ringed with cannon.  Declared a "surplus" building after the State Capitol was moved to Atlanta and confirmed in a constitutional referendum, 1877.  The College was founded in 1879.

Several blocks to the west in town is the Old Governor's Mansion, a historic centerpiece of the Georgia College and State University.

If you are a Civil War history type person, you'd also know the three occasions when Chambersburg was occupied by the Confederates, and when the town was burnt down in 1864.

The thing about wars is that nearly every town can claim something that occurred during that war.  Honestly, for those into it, it's all fascinating, and you can trace a lot of history.  A house just outside the development where I grew up was part of the underground railroad, and still has the archways of the tunnels in the basement (sealed up though!).   Although unless you specifically looked into it or the local school or non-profit talked about it, most people wouldn't know about it.

Then there's some things that people greatly exaggerate.  A decayed bridge here in NJ needed to be replaced, and some of the nearby neighbors were trying to use George Washington's marching in a war as a reason why history shouldn't be destroyed for a new bridge.  Nevermind the original bridge was built in the 1800's.  Nevermind that the houses these people lived in were built within the past few decades.   In fact, some of these people went down to the river, and instantly found 'evidence' that Washington was right there 240 years ago.

The closes landmarks to where I was raised are three churches that are now on the National Register of Historic Places. Actually, I'm not sure this counts, but there was also the Medford Hotel, which was an apparent old railroad hotel near the LIRR station that for the latter portion of the 20th Century was the Landmark Restaurant. Now it's a J&R Steak House franchise.

http://www.jandrssteakhouse.com/

http://www.jandrssteakhouse.com/location/medford-steakhouse/

So basically, Medford, New York doesn't have diddley when it comes to landmarks.

On the other hand, I currently live east of Weeki Wachee. I went there once before the state bought it. I have yet to see a mermaid show.

Historic Downtown Chambersburg, about 4 miles away from me.

With such landmarks as....    :poke:
The fountain in a psuedo-roundabout, a couple of churces, Ben Chamber's grave, the historic junction of US 11/US 30....

I think we're looking for something more on the lines of Gettysburg.
If you are a Civil War history type person, you'd also know the three occasions when Chambersburg was occupied by the Confederates, and when the town was burnt down in 1864.

The thing about wars is that nearly every town can claim something that occurred during that war.
Not necessarily...

For me, there's Devils Tower (50 miles), Spearfish Canyon (13 miles), and the Center of the Nation (20 miles to the fake one, 42 miles to the real one).

You mean the FUTURE DONALD TRUMP HOTEL, as the huge banners have proclaimed for the past few years?

U.S. Capitol building is not far from my office.

In Connecticut, I joke that when I'm arriving at Bradley, it takes me longer to get from plane to car than it does to drive home; and I often describe my residence as being "at the end of the runway".

In Memphis, I had someone correctly identify my location when I mentioned that I was parked at exactly 90°W and one other piece of trivia.

I live about 20 minutes (10ish miles) from Terminal Tower. I'm also 45 minutes to an hour away from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant.

I go to college a few miles away from the world's largest building by volume:
