CDOT requested $90 million in improvements for bridges over the Poudre, Big Thompson, Little Thompson and St. Vrain rivers to enhance flood flow capacity of the bridges and widen them to support three lanes in each direction.
If approved, bridge construction would start in spring 2017 with construction to be completed by 2019. The projects could receive any portion of the $90 million ask. The Poudre River bridge has been identified by CDOT as the top priority among the four bridges. The group hopes to hear if, or how much, of the grant it receives by mid-January.

It's absolutely retarded. If it were two tolls lanes each way I'd be more supportive. But one just sucks in any setup because it takes one asshole to go slow and screw up the lane for everyone else. I can see reasoning for toll lanes in the mountains where it's more expensive to build not on the front range. Especially north of Denver.
A week ago I drove on the recently widened section of I-25 between Colorado Springs and Denver. I was not so impressed with the modest configuration of 2 free lanes and 1 toll lane in each direction (from Castle Rock on Southward). There is so much traffic on that stretch of I-25 it should be 8 lanes wide (preferably all free).
Colorado's refusal to add any sort of non-toll capacity anymore, anywhere, is nothing short of astounding. Their DOT has clearly been taken over by the more extreme environmentalist wing that seems to have set up shop in Denver. Apparently if we don't do anything to improve congestion it will encourage people to use transit and lower emissions. Never mind that said transit generally does not exist in a reliable, fast, or useful form (not yet, at least) and that cars in traffic congestion emit more CO2 in total than when traffic flows. So we "compromise" by only fixing congestion for the rich, a demographic that often matches up well with this type of environmentalist in Colorado. The irony that this regressive system is generally pushed by so-called "progressives" is not lost on me.

Correct, there is a pro-pollution element masquerading as pro-environment. I've worked to keep car-hating language out of my city's comprehensive plan, but CDOT and DRCOG are decidedly anti-transportation and anti-mobility. And with politics the way they are in our state (I won't get into them as it is somewhat nuanced as well that subject is against the rules of this forum), things will remain this way for some time.
Aside from the politics involved, this regressive "strategy" on highways in Colorado simply ignores the stark reality of living in cities along the Front Range: everyone needs a motor vehicle to get around there.
Cities from Pueblo on up past Fort Collins are very spread out. My parents live outside the Black Forest area in Colorado Springs. Lots of new homes are getting built out there. But my parents still have to drive over 10 miles to Falcon to visit the nearest grocery store. I'm always amazed by just how much driving I have to do every time I visit up there.
It's just absurd for anyone to think millions of people in the Front Range region can all park their cars and just take up riding city buses, light rail trains and riding bicycles. We all know how insane the costs are for building any kind of passenger rail service in the US. Hell, even a freaking street trolley car setup can cost crazy amounts of money. Bus service doesn't require much new infrastructure to be built, but it still loses lots of money and has to be subsidized by taxpayers. As spread out as many places are along the Front Range there is no practical way for bus routes to cover it all.
Did I mention the weather in Colorado can be downright hostile about 8 months out of the year? Riding a bicycle may be pleasant in sunny, 70 degree weather during the Summer. How about pedaling into a fierce head-wind with temperatures in the teens? It's not real easy to ride a bike on ice or in deep snow.
Out of touch "progressives" are one faction pushing this anti-roads nonsense. But I believe real estate developers and other business people are also helping along these anti-roads efforts for more selfish, sinister reasons. They're trying to play a long game of forcing more people to live in urban centers where available living space is at a minimum. The idea is price-gouging people to spend even higher percentages of their incomes on housing.
The primary reason why suburbs exist is housing cost. Historically, people have moved farther and farther away from city centers in order to find good housing at more affordable prices. "White flight" has been a factor in some locations (such as Detroit), but housing costs are still the biggest thing driving suburban sprawl. The Front Range region is very sprawling.

Last Summer I visited my parents around Labor Day. It snowed several inches at their house while it was still technically Summer. Just this past weekend, a few hours after I passed through the intersection of US-24 and Marksheffel Road a freaking tornado touched down there.
I prefer visiting Colorado during the Summer months, partly because it gives me a short break from the 100-plus degree heat here in Oklahoma. Every time I drive up there during the holidays it's bitterly cold. The late Fall and early Spring time frame can bring hellish blizzards that are life threatening. This isn't the kind of weather that's friendly to waiting at a bus stop or pedaling a bicycle. When a bad snow storm is on its way most people need to stock up on supplies. It's a lot easier doing that using a personal vehicle than trying to carry bags of stuff onto a city bus. Wearing a backpack while riding a bicycle is an even worse bet.
Colorado's weather on the front range may have its extremes, but it is much more hospitable than the Midwest. The Labor Day snow in 2021 was a fluke. Most of the time we don't have snow on the front range until October-I can't think of another recent September snowstorm below the mountains. Even the bitter cold is easier to handle than east of us. I'd say easily that 0 degrees in Denver feels warmer than 20 degrees in Cleveland. And it rarely lasts long.

Weather along the Front Range can be some of the most extreme of any heavily inhabited place on Earth. I say "can be". It can also be very pleasant. But it is subject to radical swings in temperature, severe spring storms that feature strong winds, hail and even tornados. Winter weather that can vary from 60 F down to -20 F within 24 hours. Chinook winds that blow things over in January. I know all this because I had the pleasure of living in the Colo Spgs area back in the 90s. Gorgeous city, but the weather is only hospitable until it's absolutely not. If you want "hospitable" weather, San Diego is your best bet.
Oh, and as for the I-25 issue north of Longmont, I am shocked that this POS is still only 4 lanes! It needed to be widened in 1995 for cryin' out loud. This is third world country kind of stuff and CoDOT should be embarassed. However, considering current management, they're probably proud of themselves.

OK, this is BS. On average, Denver gets 56 inches of snow per year. That's hardly the 2" once in great while that you're trying to sell - perhaps you're confused with Albuquerque on this one. It does get quite hot during July/August on the Front Range and 100 degree temperatures are not uncommon. Particularly from Denver to Ft. Collins and even more so in the Arkansas Valley (Canon City, Pueblo, etc). And, while it can be 60 degrees in January, I'll never forget when we had the temperature drop by about 50 degrees from the 30's to the -20s following 12" of snow in December 1991. This happens on most years at some point, however, On that occasion, we reached -24 in the Springs.
Is it a worse climate than, say, Milwaukee or Cleveland? Not a chance. But it has it's own challenges, mainly from being so very changeable and somewhat unpredictable from week to week, It's not somewhere that I'd want to be living in a tent, I'll put it that way.

You realize I live here, right? And I actually experience this weather?
I just pulled data for Thornton (it was one of the first Google results) here (http://www.thorntonweather.com/detail-snow.php?year=2022), and this year, which was a very snowy year, Thornton had 9 days of 2" or more snow. The 2021-22 winter had 7 days. So, my statement of 5-6 is maybe a touch low. I'll amend to 6-7. Sound good?

Yeah, the weather changes quickly here. That does not make the weather bad. I like some variation.
And I camp 15-20 nights a year in the mountains, which do have much "worse" weather than the Front Range, and I survive just fine.

OK, this is BS. On average, Denver gets 56 inches of snow per year. That's hardly the 2" once in great while that you're trying to sell - perhaps you're confused with Albuquerque on this one. It does get quite hot during July/August on the Front Range and 100 degree temperatures are not uncommon. Particularly from Denver to Ft. Collins and even more so in the Arkansas Valley (Canon City, Pueblo, etc). And, while it can be 60 degrees in January, I'll never forget when we had the temperature drop by about 50 degrees from the 30's to the -20s following 12" of snow in December 1991. This happens on most years at some point, however, On that occasion, we reached -24 in the Springs.
Is it a worse climate than, say, Milwaukee or Cleveland? Not a chance. But it has it's own challenges, mainly from being so very changeable and somewhat unpredictable from week to week, It's not somewhere that I'd want to be living in a tent, I'll put it that way.

I just pulled data for Thornton (it was one of the first Google results) here (http://www.thorntonweather.com/detail-snow.php?year=2022), and this year, which was a very snowy year, Thornton had 9 days of 2" or more snow. The 2021-22 winter had 7 days. So, my statement of 5-6 is maybe a touch low. I'll amend to 6-7. Sound good?
We have had zero 100° days this year. So when you say 100° days are not uncommon, based on what?
Yeah, the weather changes quickly here. That does not make the weather bad. I like some variation.
And I camp 15-20 nights a year in the mountains, which do have much "worse" weather than the Front Range, and I survive just fine.

That's why I prefer visiting during the Summer. Tornadoes and big hail can be a threat. But it's not too common. The winters are what I really don't like. I don't live in Colorado, but I've been visiting the Colorado Springs area on a regular basis since the mid 1990's when my parents moved there. The weather can often be beautiful. But that can change quickly. My parents don't get anywhere near as much snow at their house as a lake effect prone location in Ohio or Upstate New York. But a blizzard can dump 2 or 3 feet of snow on them in one instance. Those kinds of storms are life threatening.

Well, I worked for a TV station in Colorado Springs. As a meterologist. So, yeah, I understand your reality better than you think. Have seen snow on Oct 15 and May 8th as well as 70 degrees in December. It's not a bad climate, but it's hardly the mildest. You usually have a 120 F range of temperatures during the course of a year. Just because you have not had a 100 degree day this year doesn't mean that they never happen. This year has not been typical, with the worst of the heat generally trapped south of the CO/NM border and/or west of the divide (SLC had several 100+ days).
BTW: DIA averages 2 100+ degree days per year. Places like Fort Collins and Greeley are more like 3 or 4; Pueblo has an average of 12 per year. It depends where you are on the Front Range, but it can get very hot. Mostly based on altitude, so worse north and east of Denver, then south of Colorado Springs (Fountain, really).

I know we get snow over a longer period of time that other places, but my whole point is that is that we don't often get a ton at once, despite the perception from around the country. I don't mind a dusting in October. Getting 1/4" is not a big deal in the slightest.
And I know we CAN get 100° days, but you mentioned that they're not uncommon. I would say, yes, they are uncommon. We might get a couple in an average summer. That's not common, especially compared to San Antonio, Las Vegas, etc.

I grew up in Salt Lake City and think their weather is just about perfect, but as far as I’m concerned Denver improves on it in a few ways: it’s higher elevation, so extreme heat isn’t as common, it gets more in the way of severe storms (large hail and tornadoes), and it is more susceptible to Arctic blasts since there aren’t any mountains protecting it from interior Canada.

Living near Fort Collins, I travel to Denver sometimes. And I've given up on that stretch of I-25 for the time being. I'll use 287 to the north end of Longmont, then take 66 to the interstate and pick it up there, well south of most of the construction, except for whatever they're doing at the 119 interchange. I'm always looking for good alt routes, though. CR 5 will take you from CO 14, to Loveland, for example, and isn't a terrible road.
To me, this isn't adding capacity, or lanes. I'm not really willing to pay to jump the line. Plus, since you can't dip out of the express lane (I dunno ... can you do it at the places near the exits where the line is dotted?) , to pass someone, it works great till you get Walter and Mildred poking along at 50. I've also seen, coming out of Denver, what happens when the express lane ends on the north end. All that stopped traffic you whizzed by at 80mph? They remember you.
I am NOT surprised that CDOT is adding a toll lane in each direction! This is CDOT's way of adding lanes...

They (not necessarily you, all of 'em) always got Canon City wrong. I lived in Canon City for like 7 years (yep - did time), and we got COS TV stations. Always felt like 5/30 had it closest.

The state legislature (a group often much less sensitive to these sorts of issues) many years ago implemented a burn ban on days when air quality is bad enough, which is actually enforced. State agencies now have work-from-home days when air quality is bad enough.
If you look at the actual numbers, wintertime air quality is certainly not good in the Wasatch Front today, but it is definitely better than it was 20 years ago. Far less "red" days than before. Also, half of the days in winter when you can't see the mountains, it's simply fog, which will happen in any valley like Salt Lake regardless of how much emissions you have. And the "orange" or "red" days combined only account for something like maybe 10-15 days across any given winter.

You certainly see the glass as half-full.
Sure, SLC has become more liberal over the years, thank goodness (to counter the "productivity above everything else" mantra that's dominated the area for decades), but being concerned about air quality and actually being willing to do something about it are two different animals. Burn bans when you have refineries and mining operations and whatever else belching stuff out? Flex seal on a leaking tank. "Just don't go out when the air is toxic"? That actually accommodates more pollution production.
And, of course, this is a state problem rather than city. And a lot of Utah is still shrugging at the pollution as a necessary evil.
Take my uncle and aunt, who live in Millcreek: Yep, they think the air quality stinks, but they're convinced that it's always been that way due to American Indians calling the Valley smoky back in ancient times, so there's nothing to be done about it from their point of view. And besides, think about jobs, of course.
And then you have my 60-plus cousin-in-laws and their families and so on and so forth.
Glad the red days are diminishing in number. For the last 50 years, the only couple I remember around here were due to the recent Canadian smoke... :D

I drove from Wyoming to Denver yesterday. WHAT A CLUSTER F***!!! I was stuck in traffic for hours southbound on 25 from Harmony all the way into Downtown Denver with a few very short places where the traffic sped up to maybe 45mph. And this is a Saturday afternoon. Even the alt routes were slow with traffic as per the map apps. I just have my doubts on how much better it will be with a tolled Express Lane from Ft Collins to Berthoud. Hopefully when they start from Berthoud to Mead if is a third lane and not a tolled Express Lane. Even in the north Denver suburbs, the Express Lane came to a standstill multiple times. Glad I was using the HOV 3+ option so I was not paying for that lane. :pan: Is CDOT that much underfunded where all new expansions are tolled? And from all my driving experience throughout the US, Colorado has some of the highest toll rates around, especially E-470.
I wouldn't be as mad if they put two express lanes each way instead of one. Or if they paired a new express lane with a free lane so two new lanes are added instead of just one express lane. It also seems there are people who genuinely enjoy tying up traffic and driving right at the speed limit and not staying to the right when they can clearly look in a mirror and see how much traffic is backed up behind them no one in front. Then the free lanes move faster at times and that is frustrating to watch.

Yeah, no kidding. It costs $13 each way to drive from the South side of Denver and I-25 up to the airport (the cost is $8.15 if you have an Express Toll tag, which I don't have being from out of state). Even $8 is kind of pricey for that short of a drive. I can drive on I-44 from Lawton to the Missouri state line (almost 300 miles) and pay $12.50 for those tolls.
That is the PikePass rate though.

Depending on where you have to go in Denver the Weld County Parkway (CR 47/49) is amazing. My wife and I found it by accident when we lived in Laramie and were going to DIA one time, and used it the rest of the time we lived out there.

I was stuck in traffic for hours southbound on 25 from Harmony all the way into Downtown Denver with a few very short places where the traffic sped up to maybe 45mph. And this is a Saturday afternoon. Even the alt routes were slow with traffic as per the map apps. I just have my doubts on how much better it will be with a tolled Express Lane from Ft Collins to Berthoud. Hopefully when they start from Berthoud to Mead if is a third lane and not a tolled Express Lane. Even in the north Denver suburbs, the Express Lane came to a standstill multiple times. Glad I was using the HOV 3+ option so I was not paying for that lane. :pan: Is CDOT that much underfunded where all new expansions are tolled? And from all my driving experience throughout the US, Colorado has some of the highest toll rates around, especially E-470.
Depending on where you have to go in Denver the Weld County Parkway (CR 47/49) is amazing. My wife and I found it by accident when we lived in Laramie and were going to DIA one time, and used it the rest of the time we lived out there.
Do you go to Cheyenne and then down the Greeley HWY to 34?
We turned at CO 392 but going down to 34 would work.

As I understand it, it is nothing to do with being underfunded and everything to do with politics. The tolls are the only way the powerful anti-car contingent that has seeped its way into CDOT and Colorado state government as a whole in recent years will ever allow any sort of highway expansion. They haven’t added any sort of non-tolled freeway capacity in years.

1. CDOT can ask the voting public for a dedicated sales tax like RTD has at any time. Be careful, though: There is a voting history out there regarding statewide transportation proposals, and it's not a good one. There's a reason Colorado Springs, for example, has something to tap into called Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA).
2. When it comes to toll lanes, that's just CDOT saying that if the drivers want capacity increases, then they have to pay for them if they want them sooner than simply waiting for federal money that may never come.
I can use the express lanes since my company gave me a thingamabobber. They're nice, but often right up until where they end at 144th or whatever it is. I haven't personally been impacted by it, but I imagine there's times that all those stopped cars you whizzed by at 80, might remember you at the clogged merge point.
I don't know that I'd use them though, if I had to pay for it myself.

I just visited CO last week and I did drive up to Cheyenne from Denver. It was kind of jarring to see somewhat busy traffic volumes suddenly just drop once you pass maybe the CO-14 interchange.

I ride the Bustang to Denver once a week, and it amazes me how every time, the traffic gets clogged around Platteville, where the road narrows from 3 to 2 lanes. Every time. Doesn't even mattter what time of day.

A good amount of truckers' GPS units probably aren't updated yet. And if you aren't already familiar with the road, "County Road 72" does not exactly indicate "this is a continuous highway" especially in an area that's chock full of county roads that become low quality dirt in the mountains. Maybe in Alabama it would, with the vast networks of high quality county roads there. But not in Colorado.
I take Owl Canyon Road and CR70 multiple times a month traveling to and from Laramie. Believe me, plenty of semi's know about it now. It is not our little secret anymore.

Even worse - the parts of that road near 287, are almost up to state-highway quality. The county did a real nice repave of a good part of that road. It reverts to 'standard county road' around CR 19, though. The striping though, around that intersection... yeesh. It looks like it's been reconfigured a few times, and if you're not paying attention, you could be zonking along at 65 in the left-turn lane.
They've been trying to do this since I was a kid. Every time the train goes through downtown, it's a truck nightmare for a while, until the traffic unborks itself.

It's also not continously CR 72. The path, you start on 72, then you're on 19 for a minute, then the roundabout (in the middle of nowhere!), and you're on 70.

Are these bus stations part of some BRT Project to Denver? I was not aware of that.
I'm pretty sure it's a new station for a realignment of the Bustang route through the area, so that it could stay on the Interstate instead of exiting into Loveland.
