Title: SR 27 Topanga Canyon Boulevard
Post by: andy3175 on January 31, 2016, 01:03:39 AM
Vegetation management along a segment of SR 27 in Topanga Canyon has been recognized for excellence as a result of its roundtable approach to resolving concerns related to pesticide use along the highway.

QuoteThe Topanga Canyon Boulevard Roadside Committee (TCBRC) has won a statewide 2015 Caltrans Excellence in Transportation Award in the category of Maintenance–Operations or Equipment. ...

In 2012, Caltrans Maintenance was found using herbicides along SR-27 in contrast to its previous practice of manual-only clearing. Topanga residents discovered the practice and protested to Caltrans and elected officials.

At the request of Maintenance's Deputy Director, a roundtable was formed in 2013 to find alternative methods for vegetation management that could be implemented in a public/private partnership with Caltrans, community groups, other agencies and elected officials.

Thus, the ad-hoc Topanga Canyon Boulevard Roadside Committee was formed to address the issue.

According to the Caltrans awards committee, the resulting Topanga Canyon Boulevard (SR-27) Vegetation Management Plan exemplifies Caltrans' core values of integrity, commitment, teamwork and innovation.

Should open Sunday. I'm happy as well. Though I don't depend on it, it is one my Sunday routes on rotation I'll cruise through to get to Mulholland highway.

A project to repave and rehabilitate much of Topanga Canyon Boulevard is scheduled to begin shortly. As a reminder, portions of the road are still closed.

Here is a Caltrans press release about the project: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-7/district-7-news/d7-overnight-pavement-topanga-jun2-start

And here's the news article about businesses and residence pushing to get the road reopened, which as of now has no set reopening date:

There are mobile VMS signs on both directions of US 101 before Topanga Canyon trying to get the word out that "Topanga Town" is accessible even though the connection to PCH is closed.  But, as with the previous slides that closed 27, I can definitely see that businesses in the town are hurting.

If the southern part of the road isn't going to be reopened due to restricted burn zone access, then repaving the road will be a lot quicker and easier without traffic.
