Effective 1/26/16, there is now a NC 906 running from US 17 Bypass Bolivia south over SR 1401 Galloway Rd to US 17 Bus, then over SR 1500 Midway Rd to NC 211, then continuing over SR 1105 Middleton Blvd to end at Beach Dr on Oak Island.
Justification appears to be that it is a signed evacuation route for hurricanes.
With that, NC 906 now becomes the highest route number ever used in North Carolina...

Yes this route goes over the new bridge built on the west end of Oak Island that opened in the past decade. 906 follows the main route most take from 17 to that part of Oak Island. It basically runs parallel and to the west of NC 87 and 133 (from 87 to Oak Island)
Created a Wikipedia page for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Highway_906 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Carolina_Highway_906)
If it needs corrections, go right ahead. :sombrero:
I noticed that this past weekend when I was driving to Wilmington, pretty neat!
Glad to see this; I don't know why it didn't happen as soon as the bridge opened.
A few months ago some photos of NC 906 was shared on Southeast Roads on Facebook:
